You didnt vote for it, you voted for discussions between RML and CWU.

CWU policy is to put any aggrement on monthly pay out to ballot.

Monthly pay was part of Phase 4 and a ballot wasn't mentioned in the pay and modernisation agreement, talks were certainly supposed to go ahead to discuss the implementation of monthly pay by this April but there doesn't seem to be any progress - mind you has anyone heard how much we've asked for in a pay rise this year?

DW promised us it, CWU does not need aggrement from RM to ballot its members, they can ballot mbrs on any issue when ever they want.

Yes of course they can - and promises are meant to be broken, the pension, the £400 a week - if for example there was a pay deal with a proviso of monthly pay would there be a recommendation to accept? TBH monthly pay isn't an issue worth persuing in isolation and it won't be.

IMHO I do not belive the promise to give us a vote on monthly pay if as and when a acceptable deal is reached will br broken.

Time will tell though if my faith is misplaced.

The joint working groups which were devloping phase 4 have been stopped.

There is no plan and no agreement for monthly pay. It is still Royal Mail `s aim to introduce monthly pay. But the cwu are not intrested agreeing that issue on a piece meal basis thats why it was in the pay and reward joint working party which only met 3 times and nothing was agreed.

The cwu`s policy is if monthly pay is ever agreed then it will be subject to an indivdual ballot of the membership.

I'm not trying to stir things up, but why is everyone so against monthly pay? I think I'd find it harder if I was weekly paid as all my bills etc. are paid monthly. Is there a particular disadvantage to being monthly paid?

I get the feeling that generally most people are not against monthly pay, what they are concerned about is how RM will help in the adjustment, and in the absence of information people are worried.

For instance what will happen during the transition:

1. Nothing - does everyone transfer immediately after 1 weeks pay at 1 point.
2. Will RM give a cash grant to aid employees.
3. Will they give an interest free loan to help.
4. Will they charge interest on any loan.
5. Or will the introduce monthly pay on a sliding scale ie 1 week - 10 days - 14 days - 21 days etc till we reach monthly pay.

Other questions that need answering.

1. How will they improve reporting procedures for non standard payments as they can't seem to get it right from 1 week to the next without getting wrong a significant fraction of the time.

2. What will happen if there is a query over pay and how quickly will it be sorted. In some cases I have heard of people going a full week without pay because of an error.

For CWU members there will also be the question of job losses at Sheffield.

Me personally I am not against it - most of my working life I have been paid monthly and my payments are set up for this. However, I will vote against it if we get a vote, and any of my questions remain unanswered.

Why not let those weekly paid who want monthly pay have it and those who wish to stay weekly stay weekly?

Why cant we have a deal along those lines?

My personal preference is monthly pay but I dont want monthly pay imposed on those who dont want it!!

A lot of people find it difficult to manage on weekly pay. If they were paid monthly the likelihood
is that they would be skint before the end of the month and their next payday.

Well that is poor personal finance management and nothing to do with being paid weekly or monthly.

Yeah I think the transition would be really hard, the only way I can see it working is if they gave weekly staff a lump sum but that would be really expensive.

In terms of getting pay right then it will be easier with monthly as you have longer to sort it out. The problem with weekly pay is that it is processed on a Tuesday to be paid on Friday, so you can't predict what's going to happen the rest of the week, so we effectively pay people in advance of completing work.

You 100% correct about job losses at Sheffield if monthly pay is implemented as it will then be possible to outsource HR. Unfortunately this would affect me. At the moment no-one will consider it with weekly paid staff.

The agenda is to make everyone monthly paid so that it can be outsourced.
