holidays ... how do they work as in seniority

how is meant to be done so being fair?
can some one who buys holidays and take priority over someones 4 weeks?

Short answer is no.

We do a first pick request in two week blocks at a time, if there's too many wanting the same weeks that gets resolved then the next second pick request in two week blocks happens, and those with extra weeks have a third pick.
With the online holiday request I wonder if there will be a standardisation of the system or if it will be a whoever can get online the quickest gets to bag the best weeks?

We have all staff split into groups, the first year group 1 gets first dibs, the next year they goto the back and group 2 gets first dibs. That way every so many years everyone has a chance of getting what they want

This is similar to what my office does except it's the individuals in each group which get rotated through a queue. It still is a pain at times but at least there's some established way of organisation.

It’s not illegal according to our union rep and manager.

The above-mentioned method may be okay as it gives people equal opportunity, especially if they reverse it the following year.

As I understand it Seniority is only illegal if it is the sole method of choosing leave, seniority can be used in conjunction with other methods as long as everyone gets the same opportunity to get their dates.

Then my office as many offices are in the smoke would be breaking the law with Royal Mail's and the unions knowledge.
So not 100% that it is illegal.
Willing to be proved wrong of course, but after near on 20 years.....

So an agreement was voted in by the members,then some decided it wasn't for them,threw a strop,got things changed.
Just curious,where were these stroppies during P&M and BT 2010?

Using seniority for annual leave selection is potentially unlawful if it negatively affects a particular group or characteristic but like everything potentially unlawful you would need to test it and who's going to do that with zero support from the business or the union?

There are shitloads of potentially unlawful goings on in Royal Mail and some of them backed by the union.
