Ideas around 5 day week

Post by exaandt »

Hello all just a few ideas that myself and colleagues have been discussing re the possibility of having to go a 5 day week.
It seems pretty split in our office some like the idea of a possible Saturday off
Others want to keep there rotation week off
We know it maybe possible to to do both loss the Saturday and keep the rotation week.
Will be interesting to see if any redundancy etc is offered to sweeten the deal maybe?
We think if you have to lose the Saturday you could either work longer days or maybe take the lost hours as unpaid to keep the rotation week.
It maybe it is optional as I'm sure RM will want maybe parcels or collections still on a Saturday.
Anyone any other ideas ?
Take care and
Stay safe

I think if Saturday letter delivery goes, non drivers will be prioritized for Sat off.

When they tried the Parcel/Packets only on a Saturday a while back, it was chaos. Over the 4/5 week period it didn't get any better. I read on here somewhere it was a trial run, it looks like they where correct.

Two week rotation
Mon - Fri
Tues - Sat , Sat Premium Services & Packets
Upto 50% of staff in Delivery Offices will be working Sats

If non driving staff are working Mon-Fri, then there simply has to be a supplement for the weekend workers, otherwise you'll have hundreds of long serving drivers 'losing their licence'.
Also, no one will be given a Monday off in my view as that will be the busiest day by far.
Another thing, are there still offices that have a (much) shorter Saturday?

Large Parcel only driving duties I would think.

If there's a reduction in staff it will be done by seniority.
Those will be duty holders
This will open up duties for day off cover reserves.
There will still be a need for annual leave and sick absence cover reserves.
There will be hybrid delivery/collection/LAT/parcel duties offered.
I also suspect the business will try to remove as much SA as possible which is no bad thing.

Well you could draw straws for the 1 in six who will lose their jobs? But last in first out is the norm as it cost's less to pay people off who don't have a contract of two years!

Not sure seniority or last in, first out would stand up in an English court of law.

Don't know if I am right or wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me but I think Voluntary Redundancy is open to everybody to apply but is decided on seniority within an office and Compulsory Redundancy is last in first out as I believe Compulsory Redundancy is paid at a higher rate so the less service the least pay. As I say, I maybe wrong.

I left my last job through Voluntary Redundancy - the levels set for that were far better than any Compulsory scheme would have been. Voluntary was offered with good conditions in order to encourage people to take it, meaning they went far quicker as the aim was to lose staff over a period of several years. So many people went for the Voluntary scheme that a Compulsory one was never done - if it had been it would have probably been on the legal minimum, so far lower rates.

I took Voluntary at one month's pay for every year of service - to a maximum of 21 months pay.

Compulsory depends on your age, but the highest amount is 1.5 weeks pay per year of service - to a maximum of 20 year's service (so 30 weeks pay). https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-righ ... ndancy-pay

In my case there were people with different jobs and skills, so it was decided by weighing up what job you did, how much it would be to replace your skills and how long it would take, your age and your length of service. Some over 55s even had their pension paid up as part of the Voluntary terms (so they could immediately draw it).
