Summer staffing - voluntary or compulsory

Post by Broxi51 »

We had a meeting with the DOM who told us about summer staffing. Later a postman said that none of the town posties wanted to take advantage of taking leave in the summer unless it was available within the normal holiday staffing. DOM told him that we had to take it. I then read part of an LTB that says anyone wishing to take leave in the summer staffing blah blah.
Now to me the word wishing means voluntary which goes against the DOM's we have to take it.
Who is right?
Any help please would be grateful as no-one wants it in our office and we feel we shouldnt have to take it unless we want it. We dont tell the DOM when he has to have a holiday so therefore he shouldnt tell us. :so there

I agree with you, was on a rest week when the manager wanted an instant decision to cover walks for free during summer in return for more people having time off during the summer. Not having kids means less pressure on child care etc but it means 50% of an office is doing walks for free to accomodate people with kids. Personally have no probs with individuals wanting extra time but let them do the extra walks for free and let the people who are happy with just a 2wk break retain their normal duty.

I heard talk that they will move ones to other offices if one office is over staffed and another under. I would not mind this on a temp basis but so long as i could state which offices i would be prepared to go to and no other. :cuppa

Just remember that your time starts at your office and they have to transport you there and back within your time otherwise do not go.

The agreement states:
Efficient Summer staffing – each unit will utilise the opportunity offered by reduced traffic volumes to re-arrange responsibilities during the summer period. This will offer employees additional opportunities for leave during the same period.
My highlights.

It does say offer not "ensure" or "impose" so sounds voluntary to me, however best to get your IR Rep to check it out with your Area IR Rep.

No-one is asking you to work for free or to work over your time.

But you can understand why people are worried about it. At the moment, in some Units, there is nothing filtering down to the shop floor about how the flexbility will affect peoples working lives. In a vacum of information rumours and fears take their place and this is whats happening. I am lucky as locally I am having an input into it and perhaps this is what should be done everywhere.

Some of the fears come out of the fact that the management have not got a clue on how its going to work, they also are under pressure to do what ever they have to make it go through and to work, problem is managers are in fear themselves if they dont do as they are told then they will be replaced with someone who will.
Thing is 1 they can bring in what they like BUT they have to make it work.
You as staff only have to work your contracted hours no more no less.
Do the job as it should be done dont come in early dont cut corners take your breaks and dont use your own cars, why because if you dont take this lot into consideration then you are giving the management what they need and you end up a knackered wreck.

Maybe each office should set up it's own flexibily committee on a voluntrary basis to get the best for us of this agreement from hell how could 64% of those that voted be so gullible to the out come of their action's?

Dont panic everyone things will change its just not gonna happen as quick as they want it to.The timescales to implement the agreement over 4 phases are not long enough IMHO going on previous revisions etc, cant see us getting the £400 or the rest of the pay rise as well by April, hopefully they will give a bit of extra time to sort things out then release the owed monies.

I've a feeling our rep will tell anyone who insists our members have to cover other people off sick or on leave for diddly squat, to f--k off, or
words to that effect. I think members ought to remember that phase two of Royal Fail's completely idiotic plan includes 6 into 5, the lapsing of one
duty out of every six for the entire summer, then if that doesn't completely rock you, Royal Fail's finest incompetents will bowl you over with phase
three of their blueprint to turn us into slave labour, the compulsory covering of people on sick or annual leave, it's not an either/or choice, it's
Royal Fail's dictat, a must happen scenario.

UNIT REPS, MEMBERS, BEWARE.........THE WRITING'S ON THE WALL. SAY NO.

Quite right, chum.............DOMs will be telling our members, not asking. I applaud your honesty, other DOMs are making complete assholes
of themselves trying to convince members that a workingman's paradise awaits them, when most members are only too aware of what really awaits
them.
