CWU reaffirm opposition to second referendum
https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article ... referendum" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
POSTAL workers reaffirmed their fight yesterday for a Brexit deal that can deliver “democratic socialist transformation.”
Delegates at the Communication Workers Union (CWU) annual conference in Bournemouth urged Labour to “move on” from campaigning for a second referendum on Britain’s European Union membership.
An emergency motion criticised the “hugely divisive” 2016 referendum and recognised the “entrenched” levels of division over the result.
However, the text said that its first priority must be for a “transformative Labour government that will deliver an irreversible shift and wealth and power,” insisting that the whole country must “move on” from the result.
The conference rejected a “damaging no-deal scenario” and urged Labour to support a deal that would protect workers’ rights and avoid a hard border in Ireland.
Tomorrow, the party’s national executive is expected to decide whether to campaign for a public vote on any Brexit deal.
CWU general secretary Dave Ward told delegates: “The reason why we are in this chaotic position is because the Tories wanted to have a debate with themselves.
“May’s deal, experts say, will have a minus 3 per cent impact on the economy.
“If a no deal goes in, experts say that it would have a minus 9 per cent impact.
“But no-one ever talks about how, in the last 40 years, as a proportion of GDP, the wages that have been in workers’ pockets has gone down from 65 per cent to 49 per cent.
“We need to get Labour elected to reverse this, which is more important than any second referendum.”
CWU young members’ chair Scott Hartles said: “Nearly all the public figures in favour of a second referendum are middle class and not working class — it figures.
“We should focus on day-to-day issues like the housing crisis, the mental health crisis, the surge in foodbank usage.
“People’s Vote is a buzzword. It means nothing to me.
“Reversing the cuts made by the likes of the Tories and the SNP by electing a Labour government means something to me.”

If it was in my power I would sack virtually all the MPs currently in parliament. There are probably less than fifty individuals worth their salt. Given the mess the Labour party left behind themselves they are still not fit to govern the country as many of those directly responsible are still MPs.

The Brexit mess we are in now is not the fault of Labour. It was the Conservatives (Cameron) who called the referendum, thinking he would win a majority for remaining, which he didn't. And then resigned.
Then May called an early General Election thinking she would win an increased majority to get her version of Brexit (whatever that was), which she didn't. But clings on as none of the extreme Tory Brexiteers wants to become leader at the moment, and have to take the blame for the consequences.
The only way out of the impasse that I can see is a General Election.

Don't the cwu contribute financially to the labour party? Someone better tell them that the labour party want a second referendum to check the British public want the deal that will be put on the table and all it entails.
Personally, I'm in the camp that we should never have had a first referendum.
It was like saying, do you want to sell your car? Yes or no. By the way, we have little idea of how much you'll get for it.
A second referendum would be, now we know how much we can get for your car, thought we'd just check with you again if you still want to sell it?

All the polls are pretty much predicting more of the same so how exactly would that help? The only way out of the impasse that I can see is a General Election.
What we need is real leadership, what we have from both Corbyn and May is a joke.

No deal all the way. We need to be out of the EU on our own terms, and if we can't do that, what's the point of carrying on?? As much as I hate to say it we desperately need a strong leader - someone like Thatcher. We had the vote,we want out,it can't be negotiated how we exit then so be it,we go it alone and deal with the consequences. We are not suddenly going to turn into a 3rd world country ffs. There will probably always be homelessness and foodbanks and stuff just like we still have problems with not enough well paid jobs and overcrowding. Sorry to be blunt but you know there's far too much scaremongering going on,too many what ifs and sure things may hurt in the short term as we adjust but it may just be the best thing we ever did.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Initially I think she was until she got in government and when the EU wanted too much the tide soon turned and the saying "No, No, No" springs to mind

Thatcher was tricked into taking us further into the mire of the mess that is the EU. I'm not defending her and was never a supporter of her policies but that was happened apparently. I never liked Blair either but I think at one point the EU lied and tricked him into signing up to stuff we should have stayed well clear of. The EU is fascist in nature with the other member countries all having been run as fascist dictatorships at least once in the past. I think one or two are currently run by fascists now and due to the actions of Hitler there is a lot more racism in many European countries.

Thatcher's view on the EU exactly matched her views on everything, she was against anything that may be more powerful than she was whether it was Brussels or the unions and she was a rampant free marketeer so she believed in free trade and the free movement of labour.
One thing she would never under any circumstances have even considered was a referendum as she believed they were the tool of the tin pot dictator. That's probably because she was old enough to remember that old Adolf and Benito loved a referendum, perhaps something those who bleat on about "the will of the people" should remember.
Thatcher was not however a great leader, to be one of those you have to be able to unite the country and she never did.

Great leaders is a matter of opinion and like I said earlier what Britain is crying out for is a strong leader; someone with a bit of backbone. I used Thatcher as an example because she probably wouldn't have come out of months of wishful negotiation with the EU and end up leaving with a crap deal. Also, when a PM specifically states that no deal is better than a bad deal and find that six months later the MPs won't agree the deals that you keep putting forward, its something akin of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Brexit or so the term applied to the exit of the UK was sold as a lie in as much as it would be easy we could negotiate trade deals and £350 million for the NHS! Really even if the conservative party pulled it's self together again with humpty dumpty in charge (MAY) is it easy no because even she cannot do it she cannot even negotiate a deal with her own party nor can anyone in the conservative party because the party is split form top to bottom! And as for the £350 million a week NHS which was the biggest scam in history. A vote sold on lies is not a valid vote which is why I support a second confirmatory vote remember in Germany people were told lies for the ends of undemocratic leaders and look what then ensued!

I didn't believe everything that I read before I voted for Brexit so I took the £350 million a week for the NHS with a pinch of salt just like the positively numerous BBC's pro-EU calculations as well. Having any sort of second vote indicates a massive gross betrayal of our democracy and would lead to more instability of demonstrations and riots. And that will happen because many pro-remoaners in the ruling elite instead of getting behind Brexit instead decided to find ways to delay, postpone and somehow reverse what we have already decided!! And they are still doing it....after everything that has happened since we voted I'm actually more convinced than ever than Brexit would be a great thing for the British people.

The £350 million a week for the NHS was a rhetorical and hypothetical example of a better use of the money, not a pledge.
But why is it be a lie? We haven't left yet and are still contributing, so any future projections are just that.
