What’s the process? Can’t it be requested or does one have to be off on long term sick?

You need to be off long term sick ideally , and not able to work for royal mail in the next seven months. You need to go through o.h assist and they have to recommend ihr. I know this because I went through the process 5 months ago. If you want to know more details private message me.

I was medically retired through IHR,,and ticked all the boxes to be registered as Disabled,,,then when I took my paperwork to the jobcentre,,I was informed I had to attend an assessment ,,and this medical assessment took no account of the reports from my doctor,consultant and Royal Mail,,in fact,,it was the very same company,,ATOS who initially declared me as unfit for any work,,then declared me as fit for work,,,so having lost a job I loved doing through being unwell,,on the advice of ATOS,,ATOS then said I was fit for work,,who kindly advised me to self mobilise my wheelchair to the jobcentre and claim ESA..my appeal fell on deaf ears,,in other news,,The Queen has a slight sniffle and was advised to rest,

They did the same thing with me.
I was retired from Royal Mail my last day was a Saturday, I was already claiming ESA as had been off work nearly 12 months, I was then sent for an assessment with Atossers this was on the following Wednesday in which the turd asked me a few questions like can you make a brew, which as I could, said yes, hey presto zero points and told to find a job so after over 30 odd years of working and then when I needed to claim benefits I was treated like s**t and made to feel like it was all my fault I have a disability.
