Long and short days

Hi all,

I've been informed that my DOM wants to implement long and short day working (I know we're probably the only DO in the country that doesn't already do it) and been given a start date.

Area Rep says it's subject to local agreement, DOM says the CWU has agreed it nationally.
I've spoken to the posties in my unit and they (mostly) don't have a problem with it apart from lack of consultation.

What's the truth then?

Blimey - Longs and shorts were agreed nationally as long ago as 2007

Longs and shorts have now been confirmed as a structural change to align attendance patterns to the traffic profile. The actual attendance patterns are subject to local agreement utilising IR Procedures.

Longs and shorts a structural change where the normal work pattern may be rebalanced across the week to reflect the traffic profile. For example, individuals could be scheduled to work 7 hours on a Tuesday and 9 hours on a Friday. Total weekly contractual hours would not change.

The Area Rep is right - it should be subject to local agreement.
If the DOM wants to propose change it should follow the IR framework.

we still don't have longs and shorts although the DD still thinks we do, we are however due to have an indoor revision when longs and shorts will become a reality.
this was due to start in Feb and we are still waiting for a proper start date.

What kind of duty are you currently doing? we have long and shorts in our office, but some duties still have a rigid 7hr48 day, firms mainly admittedly.

Long & short days are supposed to keep the wolf (RM) from the door. It has worked in our office for a while but we are starting to hear scratching and snorting noises at the door of recent.

Thanks guys,

I knew it was a nationally agreed thing but we've just not done it here.
The DOM is saying because it's nationally agreed then he can just start it on the day he wants and for the hours he wants.

My argument is the start date and shift pattern have to be locally agreed before we start working it.

Any thoughts?

In a way, you are both right. Ideally, there should be a local agreement but if the DOM wants to take Executive Action (Imposing changes without agreement) then a rep can enter a "Disagreement" under the IR process. If a disagreement is entered into then the status quo remains and no changes are made until the IR process is exhausted.

In our office the DOM and union rep both agreed it was a good thing to do. The more you can visibly match workload to duty hours the less the pen-pushers above can poke their noses and demand hours off your office budget.
