Can you give notice mid-week?

Post by BeamishStout »

I am due to retire shortly as my 60th birthday falls on a Tuesday. I need to make sure that my retirement starts from 60 or over (otherwise I believe I lose the free allocation 2016 (and probably 2015 as well). Can I stipulate that my last day of service falls mid-week or must it be stipulated as being on a Saturday? Is there any documentation or guidelines out there just in case I am being fed a crock of **** by the DOM. I do have 3 days outstanding but, from what the DOM told me today, they will either pay these days in lieu in the final pay or they may grant me them at the end of my time such that my last day of actual work would be the last day of service date - 3 days. This being dependent on operational needs/sick levels etc i.e 'if we can manage it'. I take it that I really don't have a choice in the matter :nervous

Just makes me laugh that whenever I actually leave my local LDO will have to manage in the following weeks once they are a man down until such times as they take staff on

The old contracts state 7 days notice, doesn't matter what day.
The new one's apparently state 4 weeks.
We've had people finish up mid week before.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Thanks for the above TBT. :thumbup

Is there a link to the your image?

Just to be crystal clear, there is no contractual impediment to me stating my last day of working being any day of the week?

And, is there a contact number anywhere for me to contact HR/Payroll direct or can this only be done through management?

It's a direct copy of my contract so sorry no link.

The only impediment is that its a minimum of 7 days you have to give.

HRs number is the generic one on the reverse of the pay slip. But to be honest its always better to tell your manager anyway, it saves any confusion. Also, I always recommend doing it by letter for the same reason, but this isn't necessary, a verbal notice is fine in law.

I don't think the DOM can force you to work out the full notice if you still have entitlement to holidays. I believe that is your choice as to whether you take the holidays or take the money in lieu.

At the end of the day although it's a contractual obligation there is no way a notice period can be enforced, Royal Mail aren't going to take you to court, they're not going to potentially stop someone taking employment elsewhere, it won't appear on what is a basic HR reference and at the end of the day they know you'll just throw a sickie if you really needed to.

This is just a DOM being ill-informed and awkward, stand your ground put your written 7 days notice in on the day you want whether that's a weekday or not and wish them well with his operational needs and sickness levels, that's his job and you're done with yours.

Good luck for the future.

Been in a discussion with area rep today and he suggested that I sort out the days owing (either days off or monies) before my actual leaving day as he has experience of the RM 'owing hols/money' and it is much harder to sort it our after you have left if there are any snafus. Makes sense when you think about it .

Thanks for your thoughts. :thumbup

Trying to sort out owed monies beforehand is probably the best bet. Two young lads leaving for another job was owed 60 odd hours.

One of them suggested politely to the dom, he will not work the last couple of weeks if they wasnt sorted before a set date. He got his money.

The other lad brought his dad to the office as he had a nightmare after leaving the business trying to prove and claim the money. Never did find out what happened with him.
