A question of seniority

There are a few guys in my office that question the merits of seniority. I don't agree with their viewpoint but their arguments are basically that seniority allows people to sit with cushy duties whilst many others are shafted. Also, because there will always be harder and easier duties, seniority doesn't allow people to be moved around on duties and spread this workload.
I think any other system will result in favoritism and result in the biggest moaners and trouble causers getting the easiest duties so I don't see that as better. At least with seniority, everyone gets the chance to do the easier duties with the passage of time.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the advantages and disadvantages of seniority?

It’s not perfect but it’s the best option we have I think.

Doesn’t happen at our place,I’ve had more years than many others but they put on walks before me and we had no resign and Dom says seniority doesn’t exist it’s business needs first!

Can you clarify that these walks which less senior colleagues to you are being placed on are F/T duties or walks that have been constucted to contracted hours.?

Management can not voice or back that seniority exists within Royal Mail, contact HR ask them?

Drivel, pure and utter drivel.

Who writes up the agreements with the CWU. Its the top tier MANAGEMENT, ergo local management should follow their directions or fall foul of their contractual obligations.

the jobs in our office are given out to "DDA" first in our office ,our rep has done this for himself about 3 times until the top man left and he helped himself to that job, probably 25% of the office are on jobs that were not advertised for
the senior members to apply for (lots even perform extra delivery for overtime despite needing to be on small jobs for their problem) , im all for people who genuinely need help to get it but its a farce , the area rep isnt interested either , the union is a sham.
