IHR is a flat rate of 34 weeks pay, with I think either 9 or 12 weeks PILON depending on service. With 21 years in, that will be 12 weeks.

Plus you qualify as a good leaver as far as the free shares are concerned, so no tax or NI will be payable on them.

Why do you call it Ill health retirement?. This is a settlement payment they are offering you.
Ill health retirement is funded through your pension and that would mean you have a regular payment linked with your pension until your state pension age.
I wish RM would use correct terms when telling staff.
I would advice anyone considering on Ill health retirement to check their legal rights from an employment law advisor before discussing with RM.
Hope this helps.

There are actually 2 variants of IHR with in RM!

1. IHR with payment of lump sum , as detailed above. This is payable when an employee is deemed not to be able to work for RM anymore, or there are no suitable jobs available for them. Most people who leave via the IHR process get this.

2. IHR with immediate payment of pension. This payable when an employee is deemed not to be able to work in any capacity again. and is payable until death, not just until state pension age.

The first option should be called a settlement payment to prevent confusion. A lot of royal mail staff are not aware of their employment rights. So this can lead them to be mislead.

If you want to be pedantic neither should be called ill health retirement since you no longer retire as such, you simply terminate your contract.

ill health termination sounds like something you would go to Switzerland to have done though.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

If anyone has been offered a lump sum settlement payment or ill health retirement and not willing to except this please seek advice through a employment law advisor independent to RM before excepting any offers. RM should accommodate staff with limited abilities as they are a large company.
This would come under the Equality Act.
Staff should know their rights.
