Van checks!

Anyone know the answer to this van check problem.
We've been told that we must check our vans every day for any chips/cracks/scratches/bumps/dings/cracks etc etc....
Fair enough. But what about this. Your van has already got about 50 imperfections. You have a day off or go on holiday. You then come back and are supposed to spot any new imperfections. Now unless it is a really big thing, like a massive dint, how is anyone supposed to know that a new chip or scratch has appeared. You would have to have a photographic memory so that you new every minor blemish and could spot any extra ones.

Surely this isn't feasible? How could you go down conduct for not spotting a tiny scratch amongst the dozens already there?

Get a DOM to look at it before you go, and get them to look at it when you come back. Let them take the blame if they want to be so petty.

u would be lucky to get a dom to check when u bring it back in our office there all fu cking gone home by the time we get back

You kidding me. Our vans are over 5 years old now and resemble an Iraqi bus.

We have complained about them ( We share them with another depot in the afternoons now to save costs) and our area manager has promised new ones over the last 2 years and lo and behold, he has now said we might get second hand ones.

Why not write down every imperfection on the van and see what he does? My god every post i have read this afternoon has involved pressure from management. Well done all those who voted yes, cos this is going to be the norm from now on.

We got a new van about a year ago its a 56 plate vauxhall combo-its been on the road for about 2 months total,its on its 5th engine as the previous 4 have blown up!!!!! You drive along with the stinking burning smell that the DUM says is the exhaust system bedding itself in??-after 4 engines I dont think so??

Sounds like the road Royal Fail want to go down , any little thing , blame culture & divide & rule .

I worked for "top 3 " Security Firm , the CEO was Chairman of the CBI , "It's not in our staff's interests to join a Union "

It was in our contract that when you handed over a company van to another driver , you'd to check it for damage otherwise you'd be fined and the money docked from your wages .If it happened too often , you'd be down the road .

RM would say they want to change the supposedly sloppy culture as damage costs too much .

In a ex-nationalised Industry these little things they'd have you for, were not draconian , it was to instill discipline & resolve into "our staff " .

We used to work to Leeds , we obviously had the work the Loiners couldn't do without overnight lodging , as a result there was endless petty complaints , managers on bridges , taking notes , bushes even checking up on us and the Loiner staff would shop us for any little thing .

The Leeds AM phoned the Manchester AM and asked him if he'd got the list of "misdeamnors " , he said he had , so the Leeds AM said it's good to see discipline being instilled into your staff . The Mancunian said you know where I've filed that list ? -In the bin , don't be so petty.

All that approach results in, is neurotic people who are frightened of their own shadow . But that's big AL , FUD , FEAR ,UNCERTAINTY & DOUBT or subsitute D for B. to keep us in line .

Its amazing how it works. Somebody else bumps or scratches your van, you fail to spot it the next day, it then becomes your fault. What a decrepit blame culture we live in.
Its the guy who did it who is to blame. not my problem that they didn't report it.
What if this system was used in all aspects of employment?
e.g.

Everytime you go to your work bog, you have to write down if any new event has occured, scratches, bog roll on the floor, crap round the seat.

What a ridiculous system? I scraped a bumper once in my time driving and noted it down. Not my problem if RM can't monitor the vans because people don't report things.

You can get that burning smell if you rag the arse off them!

Of course, I don't speak from personal experience.
