How about this???
We RMC, would probably be able to elect 1 if not 2 people directly to the pec, the reason i say this is because i would imagine the voter turn out is particulary low, say about 20,000 at most ao if we organised, and either put 2 candidates up ourselves or decide who to vote for 2 the official list, hell we could even run an election on here to pick the most suitable candidate now thats real democracy!! Can you imagine the fun it would cause at wimbledon hq, when "weetrogg" or "lovejoy"or" whoever we elect" turns up for the first pec meeting and they discuss the effects the deal will have on our members, and we tell them that they havent got a clue how about their members jobs have been ruined, they would ask how do you know??? to which we reply cos before this meeting ive just done a ten hours delivering mail, or loading vans or working an lsm, god it would be fun!!! On a serious note all of the above is possible if we organise and campaign in a united way. Some thoughts please??

a 16% turnout - I bet the next vote has a better turnout than that. Especially if the feeling on here is anything to go by, but then we were way wrong on the inflexibility agreement, sorry Modernisation and Flexibility Deal, my fault a Freudian slip.

The trouble is there is a severe lack of people wanting to get on. Last year only 15 candidates for 13 posts!
The result of this is lack of membership interest and some poor EC officials.
The trouble with organising a campaign is well before the elections which will be feb / march we need to select a list of our candidate(s). We need to have the debate in full. For example there are some people saying we shouldn't vote for anyone who voted yes in the pay and modernisation vote at the PEC. I disagree with this so there will be alternative views.
I think the best way to compile a RMC list would be for us to post up who we recommend and the reasons why.
Then maybe we could draw up a list, have a POLL on here to select our final candidates and then when the elections start right behind the people we recommend with posters, chain emails, comms etc?
Just an idea for campaign....... A campaign that we need to have!

We could also invite each prospective candidate to post an election "speech" on here. However, if we did we would have to tighten the application of the rules a lot for that particular thread.
For instance. No swearing at all, all comments by members would have to be respectful in their language, if not in their views. All statements of fact or opinion would have to be above board and not liable for legal action.
All in all as long as safeguards are in place and members behave themselves it would be a very good idea indeed.

But we would have to be very carefull re cwu campaign rules.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:We could also invite each prospective candidate to post an election "speech" on here. However, if we did we would have to tighten the application of the rules a lot for that particular thread.

If the rules were broken the candidate could be disqualified.

This is not difficult, as all candidate get the opportunity of an printed election address these can then be scanned onto here. You could also have a poll to see who is going to vote. If we wish to be a force we need to get together albeit cyberly and form a strategy to shape the EC.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:We could also invite each prospective candidate to post an election "speech" on here. Re: How about this???
That posting highlights the problem - there must be many capable and interested people who do not put themselves forward. The motivation then of some candidates must surely be in question.lovejoy wrote: The trouble is there is a severe lack of people wanting to get on. Last year only 15 candidates for 13 posts!

I have to say that although we moan about how poor the standard of management is and how on very many occasions there are ideas and solutions from ordinary posties they remain posties.
Why is that - on both counts?

Re: How about this???
I think that some people like running things, and will therefore go to a lot of trouble to get themselves elected (the CWU rules and policies are extensive - I haven't found time to read them all yet, and anyone who has read everything deserves respect). Those people are not necessarily going to have ideas and solutions.dvbuk55 wrote:That posting highlights the problem - there must be many capable and interested people who do not put themselves forward. Creative people are more likely to have a full life already, and won't want the extra commitment to the Union. If there is a way for the EC to discuss immediate issues and problems with all posties, as a group we should be able to come up with constructive answers. The Union is meant to represent all its members - it just needs to find a way to make sure they all have a chance to input their ideas.

Re: How about this???
Funny you should mention representing the views of all. I recently bought something from Comet on a click and collect basis. 1 week later I received a survey about my experience with the system, which as a matter of interest was excellent.jemima wrote:I think that some people like running things, and will therefore go to a lot of trouble to get themselves elected (the CWU rules and policies are extensive - I haven't found time to read them all yet, and anyone who has read everything deserves respect). You can probably guess what I am going to suggest. After a situation we have just had, the ballot, the result and a somewhat dissatisfied proportion of the membership with the workings of the Union how about a survey of the membership. The survey would take into account the different disciplines, their aspirations and what they expect in the future. Many will say that conference takes this into account, in fact the very many conferences that we seem to host, but only certain aspects are covered and it does not take into account the vast majority.

That's all very well for those who have the time and inclination to speak publicly but many are shy in public and although literate noty necessarily adept in meetings. There should be some account taken of the wishes of the majority without it being in the context of a vote.Big Daz wrote:It is very important that mbrs not only wish to get involved with the CWU on a more active basis, but have a intrest in serving the membership at regional and national level.

There are good people on the PEC and this should be acknowledged.
I don't think calling them spineless helps anyone and after all we put them there so what does that say about us.
At the end of the day our national officers voted on a document put to them by the negotiators. This document has now been ratified by the membership.
I think people need to look a little closer to home sometimes i'e branches recommending NO votes returning major YES scores!
At the end of the day the agreement is the agreement and we now have to do our best working with it. It is very easy to sit back slagging people off saying 'nothing to do with me' - It is a little harder to step forward and take up the challenge!
