Which gets priority. Family friedly or Seniority?

This is the situation. I have 10 years seniority and am currently 20hrs contract and have put in for a position I was assured would be mine, based on my seniority. Now I have been told that as they have to accommodate a family friendly I will be missing out on the position. Is this the how it should be done? P.S. The family friendly person, I have been told, will be increasing their hours through the process.

I'd check with the rep, unless they are involved, if they are then I'd check with the Area Rep.

Usually family Friendly, as opposed to Equality Act changes, is a change of how your hours are used, or a reduction in hours, never seen one where its an increase in hours. It's possible I suppose but it would be unusual.

However, in my opinion, seniority should apply first as any duty can be changed for Family Friendly reasons, as opposed to EA ones which are usually tailored to meet the particular challenges the OPG has because of their condition.

A further point in relation to TBT posting and worth investigating is what duty is this " family friendly" person currently completing and is his present duty on " family friendly" hours. If already on " family friendly" hours then why the increased hours. If not on " family friendly" hours the reason for the change?

Thanks for the info. I will be meeting my rep this evening to talk about it. Just wanted to find out as much info as I could. Will update with progress.

Family friendly has to go through hr aswell as your manager as there is relevant paper work that needs filling out. I had to do it when I applied. So maybe that is worth mentioning to your rep as your manager maybe pulling a fast one. But it's not something you will be able to look into as it would be confidential.

Also in the paperwork it says something like will this duty cost the business any more cost. So can't see how increase in hours would work. Unfortunately yes the deivery that was put in family friendly was unavailable to be picked

I would ask out of curiosity if anybody knows - is there a time limit for someone who is on family friendly hours ie 1 or 2 years etc.
Do they have to go back to their normal duty hours/contract ?

In my experience FF arrangements normally have a built in trip rather than a time limit. For instance looking after a young child, when they start school FF may end or be amended. If they are a carer for an elderly relative it will end when the need for care has ended. But some may never end - such as looking after a recently disabled family member.

No time limit for how long it is ff but manager has the right to review it every 12 months I think

Ie my above post
Is it causing any problems
Is it costing excess o/t
Is the ff arrangement still needed
Etc etc
