Britain’s biggest unions come out for Ken

The leaders of Britain’s biggest trade unions have come out in support of Ken Livingstone’s re-election as Mayor of London. In a statement Paul Kenny, Billy Hayes, Dave Prentice, Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley, general secretaries of the GMB, CWU, UNISON, Unite (Amicus section) and Unite (T&G section) say:

“We urge every Londoner to support the re-election of Ken Livingstone as Mayor of London in May 2008.â€

I used to like Ken Livingstone when he was leader of the GLC- even used to send him a card at Xmas.
But when we had a campaign to keep the Foreign Mail processing at Mount Pleasant six years ago, we contacted all the MPs whose constituency Labour Parties we were affiliated to. They all replied and offered support, except Livingstone.
When he stood for the Labour Mayoral candidacy he spoke at the CWU London District Political Committee along with the other two candidates, Frank Dobson, and Glenda Smith. He told us how he supported trade unionists, and how he would be able to publicise disputes by standing on the picket lines as Mayor of London.
When he was elected as Mayor we hoped he would support our campaign to keep jobs at Mount Pleasant. His TU unit did offer to organise publicity, with a statement from the Mayor supporting our fight to keep jobs in London, when we eventually had to take industrial action. On the day, there was none apart from a small paragraph in the London Evening Standard, which we heard Dave Ward had managed to get in. Apparently Livingstone had decided he couldn't be seen to be supporting 'unofficial strike' and had pulled the publicity, without telling us.
During a London Underground RMT strike he issued a statement urging RMT members to cross picket lines - which they ignored. And the RMT had supported and donated to his campaign to be Mayor.
Since being readmitted to the Labour Party he has toed the New Labour line.
He had nothing to say about our recent strikes or the closure of PO counters across London.
Billy Hayes would support him as he is a member of the CWU Broad Left (Labour Party supporters) who support Livingstone, but I certainly won't be voting for him.
