what length should they be for

reason for asking apparently newton mearns ,west of scotland are trialling doing 5 hr delivery spans
what are the meal relief guidelines and h&s guidelines for 5hr spans using different methods of delivery
west of scotland looking to implement these spans
bearing in mind if your busy on a 5hr del span how long would it actually take extending and what position do you take re lapsing

I think that the concept of delivery spans is no longer used. You can be requested to do any appropriate work during your paid hours and the use of trollies, etc. has meant effectively an end to the agreed limit on the time spent delivering.

You could be expected to be out delivering for the full day if that were possible, starting with a pre-prepped duty. In any case, I'm sure I remember that the old union-agreed delivery spans already had 8 hrs as the limit for a driving duty anyway.

Locally, we used to have a delivery span of 3.5 hrs with bikes, 4.5 hrs with vans. However, it is now infinite - just keep going until you drop! Some duties take nearly 6 hrs delivering even before Christmas. Currently almost all of them are taking about that long!

As for lapsing - if you have the time (or want the overtime) then do it. If you don't, then don't.
