What are the rights of a Royal Mail member off staff who has to take odd days off due to having to care for her very ill mother? This is at very short notice ....

special leave maybe unpaid though.

You have the right for reasonable time off to care for a dependant under special leave or other time off. This can be paid under certain circumstances but you will find it is more than likely to be unpaid or taken as part of your holiday entitlement with your agreement. You have stated at very short notice but in order for management to arrange cover for your duty I would pre-warn them of your situation and the likelihood of you having to take time off before the form for special leave is completed.

I am my mothers primary carer. At the moment I am managing by using my day off to cover hospital appointments. Obviously this is all don by keeping the Dom informed and aware of the situation. Knowng the appointments in advance is crutial.

The main difficulty is not knowing what my day off will be usually until friday or even saturday morning, as the rota is never done or put up in advance. Can leave you very stressed and tired though, by ever actually getting a day to rest or look after your own needs.
