different speeds of work
hi people just need a bit of advice, i'm a full time delivery postie who covers both shared vans and hct duties, i'm reasonably fit and go at what i think is an average speed but still seem to finish each duty well before the regular duty holders, we do a higher rate of flex each day and the duties have all been revised so they have an expected time for delivery given, when i get back to the office after doing all that has been asked of me im expected to take out more delivery generally due to others not being able to complete there duties which is usually the case for the duty holders i cover, have tried slowing down but find this difficult to do as i have a normal pace. surely this is some sort of discrimination just because i'm efficient at my job. ( and no thats not ment to sound big headed or anything) i do the same amount of work as every other postperson in my office but am expected to do more because im quicker surely this cant be right? please advise. thanks

Like everyone else, you have contracted hours to work.
If you acquire a Star Trek transporter, I think you could manage quite a chunk of your region alone before home time.
Are you doing the correct amount of general indoor work for the duties you are assigned to?
Do you only take D2Ds where you are going with other mail, in which case as a cover, do you prep more to compensate for the D2Ds you leave behind?
Are you taking all of your paid breaks?
Are you standing still to "filter" the bundle and get all the mail for the next address?
Are you using the correct delivery methods? You should not be putting a bag on your shoulder in most situations and your LWT or HCT can only be left unattended for short periods of time (1min/10mins?)
Are you giving attendance calls 1 minute to answer before trying Deliver To Neighbour?
etc. etc.
We have runners in my depot, that despite a hard line approach recently by managers, are still being getting away with leaving for home 45+mins early most days. Drives me mad, it does!

Whether he is a runner, or not, is immaterial. Whether he walks faster than the others is also immaterial. As is if he is younger and therefore quicker than others.
Your are paid to work, if you complete your work why is Royal Mail obligated to let you go home while they are paying you. If might seem unfair but it depends which angle you look at it.
Is it fair if a 64 year old who does the round to their best of their ability, isn't paid when he goes over the "prescribed" time limit. No. Therefore is it fair if the 20 year old is allowed to leave early, paid when there is other work to do. Again No.

You are paid up until your finish time. Makes no odds if you finish first or last. If you like feel you are losing out then slow down or stop crying as job and knock has finished!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Your points are fair, however, it is a failing of this company that as you get older, you are expected to complete the same amount of work as those who are younger than you,why do they not recognise this fact and give people a break?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Whether he is a runner, or not, is immaterial. IIf your correspondent above, wants to race around and then has spare time ,then that should be utilised, ostensibly to help others I would say. It is a failure of management above all else.

end of the day, as has already been pointed out, he is paid for 8 hrs. if he is doing 8hrs work in 6, then be it on his head. its not rocket science. what the hell does he expect. no sympathy.

flip it over, postman pat gets back 30 minutes early and there's 1 street left undelivered and with conveyance takes him 30 minutes thus finishing bang on time,
postman off eastenders finished 25 mins early, office now clear and wanders off home, he's sat enjoying a cuppa whilst the more efficient postman is still out on delivery!
is this fair? the management don't give a toss!
this does happen every few days at my office, hence my advice is to slow it down if you will get done early and get back 15/20 early max

There could be many reasons why your colleagues are slower than you, maybe bad achilles tendonitis in their left ankles.

Errrrrrr
Firstly no it's not discrimination, you have agreed to work a set number of hours and that is all the company is asking you to do.
Second this 'normal' pace you have sounds very dubious. Are you actually delivering correctly? For health and safety reasons you MUST NOT look through the mail while you are walking. You MUST stop at the door or gate to look at the next addresses not while you are walking. You also must use your trolley, you must not carry heavy bags especially up stairs, you must try neighbours for packets.
So instead of thinking you are faster than everyone else trying doing the job how you are SUPPOSED to do it then let us know how you get on.
BTW do you come in at the same time as everyone else and do the same indoor work and do you get out at the same time as the regular guys??????
