Can anyone tell me please if there are any set criteria for the selection of a Deputy to our Local Rep?
Our Local Rep needs a bit if a hand with things and so another colleague put his name forward as Deputy Rep.
Our DOM refused to acknowledge the position as did all Union members in our DO as it was felt that he couldn't simply say he was Deputy rep.
Can anyone shed some light on this for us?
We DO need a Deputy but want to ensure correct procedures are followed here as the main candidate is not everyone's ideal choice at the moment.

What do you mean refused to acknowledge the position? there's nothing really to refuse
by that I mean anytime you are allowed a union rep present it doesn't need to be a rep it can be a colleague if you want and also if you are wanting a rep present you have the right to say you don't want a certain person representing you so regardless of being the "deputy rep" said person can be included or not included if the person wants them or not regardless of having a name for their position
if the rep is struggling and needs a hand with things then he should be looking to area rep for help, it's his job to make sure that local reps are managing

At the moment we don't have a sub rep because no one can be bothered. I always had a sub rep and we both would fill out the nomination forms when renewal came round, never challenged - because very few want to do either job or H&S rep for the matter.Mezza wrote:Can anyone tell me please if there are any set criteria for the selection of a Deputy to our Local Rep?

If members are complaining, I'd put up a request form on the CWU notice board asking for volunteers for position of sub rep, say with a 2 week display time and if more than 1 person puts their name forward hold a ballot and go from there. Until sub rep confirmed, this person who has volunteered could carry on and any members who feel this person is not suitable can still request the local or area rep .
We need to grab the volunteers with both hands when someone is willing to combat issues in the DO.

I was a sub rep, took over from previous sub rep who didn't want it anymore.
A meeting was called where the sub reps position was mentioned and if anybody wanted it to see the rep.
A week was given I think. And I also think a note on the union notice board.
Obviously if someone else wanted it as well as me there would of been an election, there wasn't so I became said sub rep.
Rep informed all, management, and branch.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
