If you place a claim for an accident at work, does the cwu cover all legal costs?

It's not just a straight forward yes, but generally yes (if you turned up at work pissed took a van without permission and wrapped it round a tree, then tried to make a claim then no the union wont touch it with a barge pole) also yes call the unionline
