Christmas Deal

Post by Judgee »

Can any high ranking CWU rep on here please explain to me why Mail Centre staff are getting a deal this year but deliveries are not?

Every year we have been forced to accept that they will get an extra weeks money in their deal. Not quite sure why they got this every year. I guess RM thought that the magic delivery fairy delivered all the extra mail that was sorted in the first week of the deal?

So now deliveries have nothing and have been shafted yet again. Why CWU? We lost out in the 2010 deal, losing D2D money in the rigged vote (after all no mail centre staff would turn down £10 for doing nothing extra even if it meant stabbing deliveries in the back).

Do we not all pay the same subs? Are we not all worthy of the same consideration you seem to reserve for everyone but delivery staff? :hmmmm

WTF am I paying you my subs for every week? At the moment it seems I am paying £160 for a diary and a pen! :arrrghhh

I haven't been given all of the details only that they will be getting extra set hours paid as in previous years deals. Not that that matters so much as why are the union not fighting for all of us this year. We have had nothing from reps, no discussions, no votes on what if any action can be taken, just "there is no deal tough poop"?????

Ah your talking about SA rates and guaranteed overtime payments even if not worked. Some DOs have indeed negotiated such deals and I think its up to each individual office rep and manager to sort.

Not sure about that TBT, at least for deliveries getting nothing. I have seen an email from the CWU area rep and it looked like at least a regional thing if not a National one? Unless anyone in the Essex area knows of any Christmas deals for delivery staff?? :hmmmm

As Tbt says these things are agreed locally, as for guaranteed hours yes it still happens in a lot of do as well as mc but it's pretty difficult for a rep to argue for these against an unwilling dom considering we now have a national agreement voted in by the members which has an aspiration of working all paid hours, so to insist on extra hours unpaid goes against a nationally agreed aspiration

ZX our Dom was all for an agreement. It gives him a headache trying to get things covered as it is. We are so short staffed at the moment . Without a deal it could get messy and he knows that people will be shall we say, less enthusiastic to come in when they are feeling a little under the weather!

Have you not heard anything from the powers that be higher up in the CWU about this being a national thing?

It's not a national thing, but if a regional manger says no to these deals then the cwu in those regions have no leg to stand on, nationally the cwu agreed to work towards all paid hours being worked, it is hard to justify a new local agreement which completely contradicts this

So what can we do ZX? Is it possible to go over his head. I'm not a rep and our rep won't push it. Can I, just being a member go higher to get some kind of intervention or am I just wasting my time? :hmmmm

You can try but the only reason it's still happening is lower levels are okaying it, it's ghost overtime so the higher up you go the more they are against it, your best shot was the dom if he won't do it there's less chance going higher as at end of day these agreements of x amount of prepaid hours shouldnt be happening as far as the cwu and RM are concerned higher up

The problem is ZX ghost hours are given out every day on normal O/T. There are people in my office that do O/T and their walks and finish well before their time as they are the privileged few on cushy walks. Come Xmas time we all could do with a bit of extra cash and it's a chance for everyone, not just the lucky few to get a few extra quid to help with the Xmas bills.

Why are Higher CWU reps against it though?

At the end of the day, sorting out a deal on deliveries helps everyone-

Management have the resources at their disposal to get everything delivered each and every day.

Workers know what they are getting and are happy to work extra hours when required because it is actually worth it to them.

Customers get the best possible service even though the mail is through the roof!

This penny pinching just pisses everybody off and is going to leave RM looking very bad at least in the area that I work in and I still cannot for the life of me see why they would give Mail centre staff set SA bonus hours bonus and not deliveries??? Where is the logic in that? Ghost hours are ok for MC staff but not Delivery staff? :arrrghhh

ghost ot is not "ok" for mc staff, it's not a deliveries/mail centre divide this, it's your area managers cracking down

end of the day you are arguing to get paid and not work those hours, that's the basis, you will be paid the hours you work but you want to be paid more than that, that is very hard to justify

higher up are against it as it's hard to justify hours in an office when some of those hours being claimed are "fake"

your area manager is not usually responsible for a mail centre it's usually a different manager that is the mail centre manager hence why there may be different deals done or none at all

To be fair ZX it's not "arguing to get paid and not work those hours" it's agreeing to work over when necessary for a set amount of remuneration in compensation!

No one enjoys working over so it's an incentive, so people make that extra effort over Christmas... which now... they won't!
