sick absence

a colleague at a neighbouring office told me today that the DOM had rang him and asked him to come into work on light duties. he said no as he has a valid sicknote in, (he's off with whiplash injuries). the DOM phoned him back a little while later and said if he was not coming into work then to make sure he did not leave the house while his sicknote is in force. he also said he had the unions support on this.....any clarity much appreciated. got to be bollox surely.

DOM is talking testicles, unless your colleague decided to do something that would aggravate the whiplash while signed off sick, such as playing a rugby match!

Sick pay policy conditions state:

An absent employee shall remain at their normal home address (other than to
receive in-patient treatment) unless they have consent of their line or local
personnel manager

well reading that teebs it would seem that the DOM is telling the truth.....the bit where it says a person on sick leave must stay at home unless receiving in-patient treatment...however, he has since received a call off the area rep saying that the DOM is talking 'cack'. contradictory to say the least.!!

So I need to ring my lino to go and buy some milk/painkillers while my partner is at work (or I live alone), or go for a walk around the block (presuming I am not off work with a serious leg/foot injury)? etc.

Unless they intend to pay you overtime they surely can't insist that you stay at your home address all day everyday while off sick.

I think your spot on Postman, the spirit of that part I think is to stop people galavanting off on holdays and breaks during their sickness, without informing management. There is nothing that specifically stops people doing there normal daily tasks, if able, such as shopping for treatments, visiting neighbours or family for moral support etc.

But its so badly worded that poor managers who have no leadership skills, or common sense, think it allows them to effectively imprision someone at their home address.
