funeral attendance

Post by grabbertom »

Hi all
I have a colleague who has to attend his mother in laws funeral next Friday, The funeral is at 15.00hrs and is 350 miles away. my manager has said he can have friday but not sat so he is refusing to go to work on the saturday as he is not going to drive 700 miles in a day. I am interested to know of the repercussions of doing this. He has never been sick and n the 2 yrs he has worked here and i have told him to go sick but he has said he's not going to lie to management. :d'oh!
Thanks

He is quite right. It would be foolish to lie.
He should be given the day off - unpaid - or use up a day of his annual leave.
The DOM is an idiot. His position is untenable.

Take it unpaid or we have something called urgent domestic distress it is 1day off but if he can get a lieu day for the Friday then that would be ok

This exact scenario happened to me. They force you to take sick leave so that they can continue the bullying regime (as they will issue you a warning for it) and it keeps you totally compliant. Welcome to the Royal Mail world of affective and idiotic management programme. Where people are but things to be used and readily discarded like yesterday's newspaper.

swap his day off with a colleague and use the other day as special leave that will give him 2 days to attend

Thanks for the advice. The manager is telling him to swap his day off for the Friday and has said he cant have special leave as its not a blood relative. Just read the doc regarding special leave and it says he would be entitled to a day so i guess its just down to management to play by the rules. Thanks again for all the replies

I wasn't allowed two days for my dad. Blood relative or not it's still one day!

Also, I was never allowed a day off ever or for any reason. It was swap or get stuffed. It's another Royal Mail policy they don't tell you about

What I would have done now would be different. I wouldn't even mention a funeral and I'd be off sick anyway. Just make sure it's just two days. They can't shaft you for that

Disgraceful scumbag.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
