Annual Leave for single parent with Child under 5

We have a lady in our office (recent transferred) who is stating she is allowed to have all of her annual leave in school holidays as she is a single parent with a 3 year old child.



Does anyone know if this is true. Its causing a few rumbles.

Do children under 3 go to school? Even if she has more than one child who are school age, How does she cope the rest of the year? Kudos to her though for coping with being a single parent and working unsociable hours!

She is not entitled to automatically have it but she can submit a flexible working request,however the business can turn it down if she cannot be accomodated for any of the reasons stated, she is entitled to unpaid leave as a parent but this is only her legal protection

There is a national agreement that people can apply for flexible working, though not that it should be granted. It can also be withdrawn by either side as long as they follow the agreement and the individual flexible working contract.

worth also pointing out that there should be a business reason for refusing it, simply as it annoys other staff members is not a good enough reason to refuse it, also unless the person requesting it wants the involvement, it's got nothing to do with the union and or other staff members
