What does supporting the union actually mean?

I read a subject on this forum relating to rugby,one 'activist' remarked,
you can't be a supporter if you don't attend,so in theory not attending
the picket line would make you a follower and not a supporter?
the point is it seems the union take this 'support' for granted,while they
appear to make very little sacrifice,they have no problem in asking the
membership to not only lose money,but pay them for the privelige.
But this is not a sport or a hobby,this is our livelihood that's being exploited.
if on mass,we had all stopped our subscriptions when this dispute began,would
we have seen the union 'supporting' our cause with a lot more urgency?
