I had just finished delivery today and lit a fag up , when a women said to me "are you allowed to smoke on delivery" i told her i had finished and that as far as i was aware in all the 19 years i've been in the job there was no hard and fast rule about smoking whilst out on delivery and to be honest thats the 1st time in all my years someone has mentioned it, she proceeded to say " i think you are wrong you are being paid to do a job not smoke" to which i replied " i do my job well thank you very much and if i did smoke whilst delivering the letters it certainly wouldnt make any difference" at that point i had to go as i could feel myself losing my rag
any thoughts on this or any office's have different rules about this
and before anyone goes on i know it's a horrible habit and that at some point it will kill me, i know all this and it's my choice to smoke
I've never smoked (thank goodness) but I understand it's quite a difficult habit to give up. Why should I care if someone wants to smoke in the great outdoors? I'm more bothered by noisy bastards and their loud chav music than someone having a quiet fag after a day's work. It's not as if you're dropping fag ends on her path, the soft cow.
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!
"The working class and the employing class have nothing in common."
Not a smoker but Union reps may know the official position so I'll move this thread to the Union room.

Why is it that just because you wear a uniform people think they have a right to approach you and come out with shite like that. I think that because we are identifiable by our uniform they believe they will not get a punch in the gob which you would expect to get approaching a stranger in the street and having a go at them.
What you should do is find out where she lives and wait at her window until she sits down with a cup of tea, then bang on her window and shout, " get off your arse you lazy cow and get some work done, you're not paid to sit and drink tea ".
I'd imagine it probably comes under the "smoking in the workplace" laws... I don't know the official stance on it, but I'd imagine you're not allowed to. You definitely can't smoke in the vans...
Well we have the DSM in our office nearly all the time and he's always smoking outside by the vans during working hours....So whats good for him is good for us...i think next time he has a fag i will film him showing the time & date!

When I started in 81' I was told that you shouldn't be seen eating or drinking in public and to wait until you got in back to work. I was dragged in to see the Postmaster once as he'd seen me wearing my jumper tied around my waist while walking home. As for ciggies I would imagine she either knows an ex old postie or was married to one once, and maybe this rule did indeed exist once upon a time.

My smoking friend check out the CWU website as you will find the Royal Mail Smoking Policy is on it. Look under LTBs Health and Safety section you'll find it there eventually. It is certainly correct that since the new ban on smoking laws came into place you cannot light up and have a puff in any workplace vehicle it is a definate NO NO.

I smoke during delivery - usually I spark up when I'm filling up my pouch at a bag drop, and usually finish the cig as I re-start delivering - the only sort of exceptions might be if I have a SD / Recorded / large item at a time I think I will still have the fag on the go, then I either hold off lighting up or wait to finish me smoke before I continue delivering.
As for dropping the butts, I always flick them out onto the road, unless I'm on a private road - I treat them like a driveway, and imo that would be a no-no. I make no effort to hide my habit from my customers - if they ask, I tell them I smoke like a trooper
If I had anyone speak to me like the moany old biddy goinpostal had to put up with, I would say "I know that smoking is bad for health, but telling me not to smoke could be bad for your health!
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?
