Am I able to sign a disclaimer that would allow me to wear earphones?

Ive been told that you cannot wear them because you can't hear someone sneaking up behind you or a car going past you while you are crossing the road. What do deaf postman do? There is a deaf postman in one of the other offices so I know royal mail must have some sort of protocol.

I'm no expert on deaf postmen or women but I wouldn't think they've much need for earphones on delivery.

He wasn't being flippant its a valid observation. Just because a deaf person is a postman doesn't mean that they have a policy on the use of headphones whilst walking on duty.

DO NOT wear personal stereo headphones while on delivery.

I listen to the radio whilst walking on delivery however I only have it in one ear and then very low, I have seen so many people with headphones etc on and the music blaring out almost get hit by cars turning into the road that are crossing etc.

at the end of the day we self police and if something happens when we are wearing Headphones etc then it is out fault.

Seriously guys have some respect for deaf postmen/women. I am one of the deaf ones who doesn't have the privilege of fantastic hearing like the rest of my colleagues however I don't want to be treated any differently. And on the headphones deaf people don't get a choice if they wear them or not!! THEY HAVE TO!!!!!!

No, that would be ridiculous.
It isn't just your life you put at risk by wearing headphones, it's potentially other road users or pedestrians. How could RM have a "protocol" for that?
And trying to justify it by using a disability is poor form.

Agreed. You'll find any person with a hearing problem will be much more aware than normal hearers of their surroundings using other senses, their wearing headphones will not have the same effect as it would on us. If we were to wear them we would not have developed the same awareness and thus be a danger to ourselves and others. I call headphones 'blinkers for the ears'..
