Days off for Part time staff
Hi new to the forum so go easy, I have been employed on a 24Hr 6 months contract since Nov last year. I can honestly say i like the job however one thing that i do not like is the shift pattern i.e. days off etc. I rarely work a 24Hr week its more like a 40Hr week and i do not know what my duties for the next week will be until Friday at the earliest. When i have questioned this i have been told that they cannot give me any projected duties and even if they did my rest days could be cancelled at a moments notice.
As a result of not being able to plan any family time i have had to give my notice in that i do not want to stay with the company past the 6 months and i am actively seeking employment elsewhere.
Is this normal company practice?

Re: Days off for Part time staff
LOL well good luck working for an archiac organisation that has no morales re work life balance, guess i will just take a year off before looking for something else. Would just add that when speaking to union rep got same response " well thats how it is" madness no wonder other companies like Yodel cant compete when Royal Mail are treating their staff like slaves form the 1950"s. No wonder they are only giving part time contracts good luck to anyone on deliveries you will need it.
Any union rep wants a direct quote to take up the fight for the staff that remain just drop me a message.
i will not hold my breath.
Adios

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Days off for Part time staff
you are not to give RM the push due to the shift patterns and lack of proper holidays. Im on saturday permananent contract after five years service, but work full six days doing extra shifts, full and half walks every week. But myslelf and others are not given our own walks but 'floaters' doing different walks daily or if we are lucky the same one for a week when others are off/ I was told you are only allowed a saturday off if you want leave and cant have a two week holiday or whatever the other full time permanent staff get. Some left when they wer told this. Some people think a postie finishes every day well before noon, and you have a lot of time to spend with the family at home etc. How wrong!! lol

Re: Days off for Part time staff
I have also been with RM just 6 months and find it amazing that The rota only get put on Display on a Thursday Afternoon, for the following week, with no Pattern to when my day off would be. Now it is impossible to arrange anything, as I never know when my day off is.
This Saturday we had 5 people phone in sick. Did they want time off but could get it authorised, so they took the time off sick.
I am considering leaving RM as it is so difficult to get time off and the general lack of organisation from the management. I took a part time job as I wanted to leave the rat race and have more free time, this isn't happening.

Your reps should make sure the above doesn't happen. But who are we to judge on here.

Re: Days off for Part time staff
So quick update on the above post.
Emailed Moya who got back to me and said one of her asistants would take up the case. Then got a reply saying the following.
1. The area manager would be in contact asap.
2. All shifts would be posted by Wednesday at the latest.
3. No days off would be changed without exceptional circumsances.
well as off today the area manager has never been in touch, still being forced to work in excess of the 24 hr contract, and still dont know what i will be working from one week till the next. Well as a family man with 2 kids and a wife how the HELL is this any work life balance in this day an age.
Result my resignation went in last week and my last day with royal Mail is next Saturday.
Good luck to all who remain you will need it.

If you are leaving I would stir it up a bit and email Moya and her minion and advise them that you have resigned and why. That should
