The election of the General Secretary

For the first time in 14 years there is an election for the lead role in the CWU the general secretary's position. The election between Dave Ward and Billy Hayes will shape the direction of the union for years to come. The union has not punched its weight politcally for years and we have surrendered to much for too little in return to the Labour Party.

The trade union movement and wider workforce is being swamped by employers exploiting workers with zero hour contracts , quicker ways to hire and Fire , contracting out work to cheaper workforces etc.

The cwu have legal agreements which stop this but for how long ? The union should be campaigning to stop employers from being allowed to create anti workers rights.

Dave Ward is the general secretary we need but who would you support in an election which will be about the future direction of the CWU ?

There's more chance of breaking into Fort Knox than breaking into the union Cabal. This will already have been sewn up even before the election was promoted.

DW has negotiated for a number of years on behalf of the membership and that has not been to our advantage and here we have dingo promulgating DW for the leadership

Billy is ready to hang up his pouch and the only other candidate is DW - some choice that election gives.

Personally I think we should advertise for the Role outside of the CWU with the hope that any new incumbent won't have quite a close relationship with the hierarchy of RM.

There would be another election as I understand it. So he would have both roles, or his current deputy would take over until an election is held.

I still believe that from branch level upto GS it should be two terms in office, followed by at least one term back to the shop floor, and I don't mean some cushy delivery somewhere, that only has one pouch of mail a day, and hardly any packets, the union hierarchy are so out of touch it's unbelievable. How can someone who hasn't worked in delivery or processing for excess of 10,years be expected to understand what the members face on a daily basis.

Well it'll be like musical chairs then each successive election leaving a vacancy below ad infinitum

As a rule and I may be wrong but the average member doesn't give 2 f***s about the GS role it's who's in the DGSP'S role that matters.

Only one winner in my opinion and that is Dave Ward.

I'm more worried as to WHO would fill his boots.

My real concern is that so much energy & time will be taken up by their respective supporters trying to outdo each other when the focus should be 100% directed at all of the outstanding issues, such as bullying managers, revisions, absorption, increasing sickness levels etc etc etc.
