Unit Readiness Check

Post by Mezza »

We've been told that next week we will be having a 'Unit Readiness Check'.
Apparently the revision team will visit our office to determine if we are ready to undergo a second revision. We had our (first) revision about 18 months ago.
We haven't had a PIR that we know of (probably just signed off and dealt with under the table so to speak).

Does anyone actually know what's involved in this 'readiness check'?

It's a check to see if the foundations are up to date, A+ and such likes.

Have you a rep in your unit?

We do have a local rep but he doesn't get involved in much if he can help it.
When the (first) revision took place he assisted the planners and signed everything off but that was about it.

He happens to have one of the easier duties in the office as a result and still uses the only RM bike left in our office for his delivery (tells you all you need to know there).

The A+ hasn't been maintained or updated fully since the revision some 18 months ago.
I'm aware there is some sort of thing where by the A+ updates are signed off each week a bit like the D2D delivery confirmations(type of thing) but as norm in our DO these type of things, they get signed off but are never a reflection of what is actually going on.

We have had a huge increase in delivery points with hundreds of new builds over the past year or so and plenty more coming as well.

Coincidently our DOm is on holiday next week when the planners arrive for this check - handy as he will be unavailable to answer any tricky questions. No doubt our only lino (only been in the job 6 months) will have been briefed as to what to say etc.

Call me paranoid but i have a feeling a lot of stuff is going to get swept under the carpet.
Whilst i realise it's probably just a means of cutting a duty or two, the fact that we have false duties is cause for worry in itself.
i believe we have 9 driving duties (mainly firms deliveries and a bit of residential), of which only 6 actually exist, we also only have 1 PT duty with about 50 daily duties in our DO.

False duties sounds very odd!

Your rep has got to be fully involved every step of the way. If the rep refuses, go to area rep. Do not allow this to just happen as it did previously.

Our local rep will no doubt be involved, although i should add he knew nothing about this second revision until it was announced to the whole office.

He will probably mainly be used to sign anything off and the less he needs to be involved the better as far as he is concerned.

Before our last revision our indoor duties worked to a 1 in 4 rota regarding weekends off - it was seen as fair compensation for having to work thier full hours every day whilst those on delivery were doing job and finish.

Post revision and the indoor duties were informed they had to fall in line with the rest of the office and work a 1 in 6 rotate like everyone else.

They took it all the way to a level 3 grievance as according to the 2014 National Agreement a 1 in 4 rotate would be made available where possible (i should add at this point that there had never been a complaint from anyone on a 1 in 6 about the indoor staff working a 1 in 4).
The outcome of the Level 3 hearing was that an addition had been made to the offices vote on the rotate pattern they would like to work. The office had voted to carry on with the 1 in 6, but the addition stated that the indoor staff would also work a 1 in 6 and that it had been agreed at local level and signed off by our Union rep.
The indoor staff asked for a printed copy of the addition but were told it was not available.
The Area rep was contacted about this and he said he knew nothing about it and that he didn't think our local rep would have agreed to something like this without speaking to the staff involved.
That was it, done and dusted and the indoor staff are still working the 1 in 6 to this day.

That's just one example of what has come out of our first revision and as i said earlier we have had no PIR either.
There is no faith in the local rep looking after the good of the staff and the Area Rep is hardly ever seen.

Since the announcement of this readiness Check we have had two visitors to our office (who i believe to be from other local offices) sitting at the computer with the DOM to clear up the A+ system as best they can. The A+ has always been the responsibility of our DOM Support, but after the Level 3 Grievance along with our RLE he now has to do a 2hr delivery every day as well as all his previous work and doesn't have the time to do the A+ work and a whole lot of other stuff on a daily basis. The other work is left to pile up and eventually staff will be offered OT to help clear it, even though other staff are going home up to 2 hours early every day.

We have had no new starters for about 2 years at least, despite losing several staff - these hours are now used to pay out OT so that several staff can come in an hour early every day to throw off packets and to distribute the mech trays.
We have no proters, managers throw off walks on a daily basis as well as doing the missorts and often helping with the tracked items (work they should have nothing to do with) - honestly it's a complete shambles and my only hope is that the planners see it for what it is and help get it sorted, but i very much doubt it.

I see. The key on this next revision will be for full involvement of the rep to ensure every phase is followed correctly and nothing gets signed off untill it has. A good revision for all staff can be had but the rep has got to get hands on. If the rep is not up for the job, he will not be representing the members. If the majority feel much similar a vote of no confidence maybe in order.

This should be an opportunity to put things right. Don't sit by and watch it not happen.

Just to add, some may say a naff rep is better than no rep. Seriously? A naff rep can stitch up so much for so many which you would struggle to overturn if he's agreed it.

I completely agree with what you say there.

The only reason he ended up doing it was really down to the fact we hadn't had a local rep for a few years and nobody wanted to do it.
I don't think much has changed in respect of that, there won't be many if any in a queue should we vote him down and then we end up in the situation we were in a god few years back where getting the area rep to get involved in anything was near impossible as it's still the same bloke.

The one thing we most definately have in our favour these days is a huge number of disgruntled staff who will quite happily voice there opinions and concerns when the planners finally arrive.

As part of the readiness check, the rep' and members also need to be satisfied and have faith that there DOM is recording all unmeasured hours being used to resource the unit on a daily basis, for example ; early starters, meal reliefs not being taken, managers prepping or delivering work. I think these points alone will mean the majority of Phase 1 sign offs won't get done and any revision will stall.

How many Div reps do you have in London?
Is there a breakdown of how many there are and where they are based?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
