I just received my e version of the CWU Voice and as I'm waiting for a parcel from DPD I thought why not have a read.

Well I got as far as "slumped in the back of the cab the driver said he was a member of the CWU and his rep had just signed off a transformation which wasn't great but he was happy with it"...................well I read no further.

Can't really take the blog seriously now after reading Billy's opening gambit.

Our job is to continue to build strong workplaces while having a broad strategy – to think globally, but act locally.

Nice sound bite, Billy must do a lot of thinking, maybe that's why he is so tired all the time.

Decision making must be tiring though, sausage roll, pasty, mince pie, meat pie, chicken salad baton, so many choices - ah feck it give me one of each

the endless references to pies ect are pretty boring, but for a leader of our union to write a load of rubbish like this deserves derision. if ever an individual was removed from the reality of what a working day was like for the rank and file William seems to be it. I wonder how many national officers, div reps, pec members will visit the coalface this month? good on them if they do, but in over 30 years work ive never seen one.

If I met Billy I would love to ask him this question.

"If the CWU had to get its subscriptions from each mail centre or DO in a subscription can that was rattled around the place each Friday afternoon and each member
had to place £3 a week in the can for services rendered by the union for the previous week how much does he think would be raised?

Or to put the question another way:

"At the end of each week the union has to come up with a list of all it as achieved for its members in the previous week and the CWU rep has to convince each member to
put £3 in the tin can to subsidise the next weeks battle for workers rights and protection in that particular local workplace, how much does he think would be raised?"

I wonder what his answer would be.

Forget the tin cyclopz, how many people would contribute if the subs weren't directly taken out of their wages and it was debited from a bank account. A move that should have been made years ago to be truly independent from RMs apron strings instead of becoming another tier of management.

This has always bothered me this method of revenue collection.

I mean all the Royal mail has to do is threaten the CWU with non collection of subs and I'm sure the CWU will dance to their tune.

I agree DV, this method of subs collection should have been changed years ago.

A couple of years ago a major retail shopping concern was being hard assed about their HGV drivers and assumed the numbers in the union was reflected by the subscription paid through their salary - however as drivers move on a fairly regular basis many pay their subs via direct debit. The union took a ballot and lo and behold 70% of the drivers voted to strike which was a wake up call to the employer who had assumed there would be little prospect of industrial action. Therein lies the strength of RMs position in any negotiation they know exactly the position the union hold as a percentage of the total workforce.
