Missing Persons Charity – PDA Alerts

Branches should by now be aware of a new initiative involving the Missing Persons Charity which was planned to be launched later this month. However news of the Royal Mail partnership with the Missing Persons Charity was leaked to the press (not by the CWU) meaning the communications had to be brought forward at very short notice.  

The support for the charity will formally commence on 1st December 2014, from which point Royal Mail will issue high risk missing people and child rescue alerts as and when they come in. This will equate to an average of around one alert a week issued to PDA devices in the relevant localities – the vast majority of alerts will not be national.

Royal Mail will only be supporting the charity in high risk scenarios such as child abductions and when an adult who is in danger, or who poses a danger, goes missing.  

The process of issuing alerts to PDA devices will be managed by Royal Mail’s Corporate Responsibility and Community Investment team. Royal Mail’s security team will support this by logging Missing People case reference numbers with the Security helpdesk in case any of our members phone the helpdesk with information, instead of the charity or the police forces as indicated via the messages sent to the PDA devices.

Branches and Representatives will wish to note that this is entirely voluntary on the part of our members and there is no liability/come back where information provided does not prove to be substantiated. In fact information can be sent anonymously if that is the desired way of communicating any information.

The importance of this service and the invaluable support it can bring to situations where people are missing is unquestionable, and knowing the nature of our members I think we can all be confident that they will support this initiative wholeheartedly, an initiative thought up and pursued by Vinnie Micallef the local CWU Delivery Representative at Bow Delivery Office who should be highly commended for something that may prove to be a life saver.


And let’s also hope it doesn’t go unnoticed by certain bodies taking an interest in the affairs of Royal Mail who are the sole providers of the USO and the only Postal Operator providing this outstanding service to the communities within the UK, which clearly illustrates the value of the USO and the confidence and trust that people have in Royal Mail and our members.

Managers' Update

Our new partnership with Missing People


Please read this update about our new partnership with the charity Missing People. Please print and distribute copies of the News Flash for members of your team.
Today we are launching our new partnership with the charity Missing People to help locate vulnerable people who have gone missing.
Around 250,000 people go missing every year and around a third of these are children.
Using our extensive PDA network we can distribute missing people appeals very quickly to our people across the UK, and watch out for missing people whilst carrying out our work.
How it works:
When a vulnerable child or adult goes missing, the charity will ask us to send a message to colleagues’ PDAs in the relevant locations.
The majority of alerts will be local, but some will be national. PDA messages will include a description of the missing person and a telephone number to call with any information.
We will start to issue alerts as they come in from 1 December.

sorry to put a nagative spin on this idea, it is a very good idea however, until we get a smart phone type PDA which can see pictures the text message we get will be almost useless.

so we get a text to say a 6 year old child wearing a red coat and blue jeans has gone missing in a certain area, what are we suposed to do, follow the child ( and possibly look like a nonce ) until we can find a payphone to tell our Dom / lino where we are and where we have seen the child.

most people on here have not been shown how to use their PDA as a phone to be able to call their DO. ( you need to type in a pin number to enable it )

when we have smart phones and can access them like phones then it will become a good idea.
