Been asked to be union rep as rep retires soon not sure about it , what are the pros and cons?

Not worth the hassle, doms don't take no notice of you, and area reps don't help you either

Thankless job, just the same as banging your head against a brick wall, dont get paid nothing for either.

Help out the people you can help out, ignore the criticism from those who love to have a pop but would never dream of doing it themselves, and give the gaffers some aggro when you can and you'll be alright.

Oh and have a few days every now and then out of the peeing wind and rain doing a course or SI meeting.

I still believe that a good CWU Rep can influence how a unit is run and provide much needed advise and support to local members. At times it will be a thankless task and you may be occasionally be caught between two stools on some issues but provided you get the support and training to do the job properly there will be a good deal of job satisfaction if you have the right qualities. Not an easy job by any means particularly in 2014.

What Budfrog says is accurate. You need a steel plated back because you'll always have fellow posties trying to stick knives in it (for whatever reason). But you can make a difference. It helps if your branch is supportive and you've got a decent support network in your own office.

Can be very stressful but the good days outweigh the bad days. Read up on the relevant agreements, develop a good working relationship with the DOM and ignore the moaning minnies.

Thanks for all the advice still a bit undecided plus and negative points , I know there is no financial gain but our your subs paid if you are rep?

No, you still pay your subs like everyone else.

however, this year I did get a free Pocket Diary ( sells of £1 ) so thats a bonus.

yes you have s**t days but you also have good days and helping out a fellow member and getting one over the DOM is always a bonus in my book.

give it a go and if it's not for you quit.

One of ours don't know of any agreements they think we are all as gullible as they are too their senior management team bunch of tossers!

swat up and know all the rules no point in being in any meeting not knowing what you are talking about could cost someone their job if the rep is useless you have to defend yourself no point paying union dues
