Amazon Doorstep Scanning Trial
Letter to Branches
To: Branches with POSTAL Members
Dear Colleagues
Amazon Doorstep Scanning Trial
Further to LTB 483/14 which covered the initial trial in 3 Delivery Offices to scan all Amazon RM 24/48 (1c/2c untracked) items at the delivery point as part of a service enhancement to confirm that delivery has been attempted.
We have continued discussions with Royal Mail regarding the Phase 2 approach and have agreed a further list of Postcode areas that will receive the ‘Delivered Scanned’ items from Amazon requiring a scan at the point of Delivery and as such have amended the TOR to reflect this.
The deployment of the trial will be extended to the areas detailed below, in line with their relevant deployment date.
In line with the above deployment plan we have agreed a full communications and training plan which is included in the TOR and will begin from w/c 27th October.
Each unit will have a point of contact with a member of the central deployment team on the go live day to reinforce the training and answer any questions. The absolute emphasis of the training in Delivery Offices is that the items must be scanned on delivery. In addition Workplace coaches will be utilised the week before deployment and on go live dates to ensure staff are confident with the requirements and the processes.
In addition Royal Mail have had further discussions with Amazon who are still clear that they don't envisage using any carriers in the future who cannot provide a doorstep scan facility, in order to significantly reduce compensation claims and provide evidence of delivery.
Finally Branches will also be aware that most competitors now offer Track & Trace on most of, if not all of their products and Royal Mail need to be able to offer a similar service if they are to remain competitive, retain market share, and stave off any potential loss of contracts to the competition and we continue to support this initiative.
The updated TOR and associated Comms are attached to this LTB. Please note NR does not refer to Norwich it is National Rollout.
Any enquiries to Bob Gibson’s Office, quoting reference 530

Re: Amazon Doorstep Scanning Trial
Ok, now it's surely time to get rid of those stupid big bulky PDAs and have a micro version whereby we can scan every single item as required at the doorstep and there's no silly useless screen for scribbly signatures or lists of pointless options.
Just zap it, delivered? yes/no. (the default should be yes every time, you'd only have to go to the trouble of selecting 'no' if you were standing there waiting on the doorstep anyway). Done, onto the next.
Surely in a sane world, the word of the postman on delivery that is was delivered should be enough when coupled with a trackable scan at the GPS point of the address, not some illegible scrawl.

Re: Amazon Doorstep Scanning Trial
What they are saying is that, looking forward they are not going to contemplate a service that is not tracked. If the cheapest tracked service RM offers is comparable to a competitor's they'll use us. If it isn't, they won't. Not exactly holding a gun to RM's head, just saying what their minimum level of service is going to be in the future and RM currently does not cut it.

They need some decent PDAs as none in our office can last more than 20 mins before reading 10 per cent!k979aaa wrote:And we don't have the resources to do it so it will fail.

In the areas that will be starting the trial, will ALL the Amazon be passing through the MCs as Tracked?

Well they did a trial some months back in a few offices so would see if anyone posted any negative impact but they would not do it if it cost them more would they!SpacePhoenix wrote:In the areas that will be starting the trial, will ALL the Amazon be passing through the MCs as Tracked?

Moyà told us Privatisation was needed to raise much-needed funds for modernisation. Let's start with better PDAs....it is embarrassing to turn up with a Brick.wannabeek wrote:Ok, now it's surely time to get rid of those stupid big bulky PDAs and have a micro version whereby we can scan every single item as required at the doorstep and there's no silly useless screen for scribbly signatures or lists of pointless options.

Re: Amazon Doorstep Scanning Trial
Like all these "service enhancements", fine if the resources are put in place but I expect like delivery to neighbour it will be the usual bollocks about it taking no extra time. The problem with that is it's a short sighted, half-assed approach because just like DTN if there isn't the time, it won't get done properly.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: Amazon Doorstep Scanning Trial
I have no issue with scanning all Amazon parcels, just give us the equipment todo the job. The current PDA's are not fit for the job, they crash way to often, are bulky, takes to long to get the screen u need and the battery is a joke.
I had a amazon parcel delivered by amazon themselves yesterday. The bloke knocked, i opened the door 20 secs later, he scanned the parcel and said bye. He was at my door for 30 secs at most. He pressed 1 button to confirm delivery and was on his way. The scanning of the item cost him maybe 10 secs extra then not scanning as he had to knock anyway. This is fine by me a quick 10-20 secs in parcels we can fit through the letter box is not a major issue and if it means getting amazon back then all good.
The problem i have with our PDA' is that u need to unlock the gun(or enter a pin!!!) which can be a pain in the wind and rain. Then select delivery, scan the item, select continue, then delivered and then lock it again if you don't want it beeping like made or coming up with the phone screen.
The bloke yesterday pressed scan then delivered and that was it. Our process is to bloated and needs streaming down. All out scanners need is the ability to scan and send the info back, it does not need a phone, sat nav and good knows what other windows crap is on there.
