Postal Digital Assistant PDA – Service View

Further to LTB 296/14 which detailed the Joint Statement covering the use of PDAs (Service View) in the 20 Delivery Units visited as part of the National Delivery Review. Royal Mail subsequently only had the network capacity and capability to switch on service view in 17 of these sites.

We have been informed by Royal Mail that monitoring of PDA devices in these 17 Delivery Units will cease with effect on or before 3rd October.  This means that the PDA data which was collating information around locations and route history using the Service View Chrome icon, will no longer be captured. However, normal PDA service and functionality is unaffected.

The next steps will be for PDA data which has been collected during the process to be jointly analysed at National Level, and as a part of the Integrated Delivery Programme, to inform the ongoing discussions on each of the Strands to enhance the service provided to Royal Mail’s customers through an improved delivery and collection operation.

In addition the outputs will also form part of the ongoing discussions around the future of PDA technology, its use in capturing new commercial opportunities for Royal Mail, and any other related issues.

You mean the trial was successful? Mind you when has a trial not been rolled out successful or not.

In the United States they use pda's to scan barcodes that are on street lamps along route so the management know exactly where they are along the route and to make sure they are keeping to time,

Can't they monitor the pda's in our office? The amount of time wasted daily with these things is terrible , not to mention the level of stress they cause.

Lets be honest. Existing functionality couldn't really get any worse. I'm sure the only thing the trial proved is how useless they are, not that they would ever admit that.

Surely that means the trial was a failure, if the network couldn't cope with a small scale trial there's no way it will work if rolled out nationally.

Isn't the next-gen of PDAs around the corner? They'll undoubtedly have tracking builtin that uploads when you dock it back at the office.

I personally don't care about tracking or being checked up on. I can just imagine them in the office wondering where I am as the bloody things are always going offline. Generally takes a reboot to connect again and I can't be doing that every 10 minutes.

Why worry about a consistent signal? The PDA has a memory of its own and does not need to communicate until it is cradled.

Well speaking from a personal point of view I like to be cradled regularly

They would do well to trace me. Near the end of my delivery it nearly always runs out of juice, And they wonder why tracked items fail. Is it really that hard to get some replacement batteries?

If it is anything like our office when you have battery problems you just take a battery out of someone elses, problem solved. When you don't have enough pouches, take someone elses, problem solved. If you don't have any bands....
