Casualisation at Work a Guide for Trade Union Reps

The Labour Research Department has produced an 88 page booklet titled ‘Casualisation at Work – Includes Zero Hour Contracts: A Guide for Trade Union Reps.’

The aftermath of the recession has seen a deeper and more fundamental structural labour market shift, with growing levels on involuntary casualisation of work firmly linked to low pay, low skills, minimal training, stunted career development and poor prospects.

This LRD booklet looks in detail at the main forms of casualisation that have developed over the last six years and the actions being taken by trade unions to fight back, with the booklet covering:

Payroll companies and false self-employment
Umbrella companies
Personal service companies
Zero hours contracts
Agency working
Fixed term contracts
Volunteers and interns

The booklet also sets out how an individual’s employment status is determined and details workers’ basic statutory rights. Examples of trade union action to combat types of casualisation are provided throughout the booklet together with the relevant case law.
