Lobbying-The Effect of End-to-End Competition on Royal Mail
No. 459/14
Ref: GS11.0
Date: 10th July 2014
To: All Branches
Dear Colleagues
The Effect of End-to-End Competition on Royal Mail
We now write to advise Branches of the details for the forthcoming Briefing and Lobby of Parliament.
The Union will be inviting Members of Parliament from both Houses to a briefing and lobby on the effects of end-to-end competition on Royal Mail and the future sustainability on the Universal Service. Royal Mail’s use of revenue from easier-to-serve, densely populated areas covers the cost of a nationwide network under threat from cherry picking in urban and suburban areas by TNT Post UK, which could have a serious impact on the financial sustainability of the one-price-goes-anywhere, six-day-a-week USO.
We would therefore ask Branches to make the necessary arrangements to meet with their Members of Parliament directly after the event concludes and ask them to sign EDM 151: END-TO-END Competition and the Universal Postal Service http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2014-15/151" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The details for the event are as follows:
DATE: Tuesday 15th July 2014
Time: 1.30pm – 3pm
Venue: Committee Room 11, House of Commons SW1A 0AA
To gain entry into the House of Commons, Branches should ensure they are at St Stephen’s gate by at least 12.45pm to allow for sufficient time to pass through the security.
All Branches should aim to send at least two representatives. We want to ensure the maximum attendance and therefore you are asked to do everything you can to attend this very important event.
If you have any enquiries on this LTB, these should be addressed to the General Secretary’s Office at gsoffice@cwu.org quoting the reference GS11.0
Yours sincerely

Government don't care, they stopped caring when they allowed us to be privatized.

Re: Lobbying-The Effect of End-to-End Competition on Royal M
So Hans what do you suggest put the white flag up ?
It won't mean a Tuesday to Saturday delivery at all. What it will mean if the USO goes is that a lot of areas where it is more costly to deliver will get just one or two delivery per week. Other may get more and the major cities will still get a delivery per day.
There is a general election less than a year away and the tipping point for when the USO would become unsustainable is probably 2016 so why would the CWU not appeal to mps now ?
Most mps do not realise that 20 000 TNT low paid jobs may mean 60 000 well paid jobs in Royal Mail go !

Or not - why would they still deliver every day in major cities dingo when it would still be cheaper to do alternate days with fewer staff with larger and more realistic deliveries. Perhaps we should look to change PIP to POD once the USO disappears, that was always the way to go.dingo wrote: Other may get more and the major cities will still get a delivery per day. !

Re: Lobbying-The Effect of End-to-End Competition on Royal M
Either the CWU knew when it signed up to AFG that it was meaningless because the USO was already under threat and wouldn't survive the 5 years of unchanged terms or have things changed so radically that the USO has become unsustainable since the signing of AFG?dingo wrote: and the tipping point for when the USO would become unsustainable is probably 2016 so why would the CWU not appeal to mps now ?
TNT were already present on the streets and their ambitions weren't shrouded in secrecy, so either nobody really has a clue what is going on (in which case your tipping point of 2016 is pure guesswork and may arrive much sooner) or nobody really has a clue what they are doing.
What's happening with the 100 underperforming offices?
It would appear that the inefficiencies in these offices are putting 60 000 well paid jobs at risk.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

LTB 463/14 Parliamentary Briefing - 15th July 2014
No. 463/14
Ref: GS 11.00
Date: 11 July 2014
To: All Branches
Dear Colleague
Parliamentary Briefing - 15th July 2014
Further to LTB 459/14, attached is a guide for branches who wish to lobby their MPs whilst attending the CWU's Parliamentary Briefing on 15th July. A factual brief will be available at the meeting to aid discussion with MPs.
Date: Tuesday 15th July 2014
Time: 1.30pm - 3pm
Venue: Committee Room 11, House of Commons SW1A 0AA
Lobbying
Lobbying is the practice of making representations to Members of Parliament and Government. This is done by individuals and organisations in order to change policy or bring matters to the attention of the Member.
Why Lobby?
Lobbying is simply trying to influence a decision in person, by letter or through the media. At its most fundamental level, it's a potential exchange of interests: "If you support us on this issue, people like us will vote for you". Or, in more extreme cases "If you support us on this issue, we'll stop making your life a misery in the media."
Although MPs can be powerful national figures, their chief function is to represent their constituents. Nearly all MPs are keen to get good local press coverage, which means they have to take account of local campaigns in their constituencies.
You might decide to approach your MP:
To influence a decision which is about to be made in Parliament
To gain their help with your campaign
To persuade them to take action on your behalf
To force an MP, who might be sitting on the fence to show where their allegiances lie.
Because your MP could be useful to you in the future.
Because, through garnering the support of policy makers, you may be able to influence decisions on potential legislation.
Rules to follow when meeting your MP
1. Be clear about the purpose of the meeting
2. A lobby visit is a conversation, don't give a lecture
3. Stick to the basics
4. Keep the conversation on track
5. Don't lose your temper
6. Get a commitment
7. Don't be intimidated
8. If you can't answer a question, don't try.
9. Remember to follow up
If you have any enquiries on this LTB, these should be addressed to the General Secretary's Office at gsoffice@cwu.org quoting the reference GS 11.0/LTB 463/14.
Yours sincerely

Re: Lobbying-The Effect of End-to-End Competition on Royal M
How many MPs will be there and will they be at all interested considering they haven't been up to now? Will those who are there have any influence at all. Considering it is such an important issue there was very little notice and the meeting is scheduled for just 90 minutes to cover many aspects of the E2E problem. Are the financial implications of continuing the USO against the competition and therefore PROFIT for the company and shareholders going to be on the agenda?

competition rules were brought in by gvmt (labour)rm and cwu to do away with monopoly of mail
rem competition good for the business
they opened the door for private companies to suit their own agendas and mates in higher places
this has been planned for over 20 yrs it has been organised and manipulated by all gvmt parties
to try to retain monopoly of mail would not be seen as fair to competition and would end up in court and we would get hammered
yes you can insist on tnt and uk mail deliver to all parts but this would also lead to massive job losses for us
and we dont have enough mail centres or staff to deal with the tnt uk mail we gave away
you reap what you sew
