WHY WE MUST SUPPORT FURTHER ACTION

Dear Members

Despite the best efforts of the CWU at national level we have been unable to reach an agreement that puts an end to the current national dispute.

On this basis further action have been called next week from 6pm on Monday for 24 hours. Details of how this will affect you are posted on the CWU notice boards. You should also be aware that talks are still ongoing and that the CWU are still 100% committed to reaching a negotiated settlement.

I know full well that this dispute is hurting us all financially but I also know that Royal Mails plans for pensions, flexibility and the future of the industry would devastate every single one of us!

The key question from members across the Country now is will more strike action break Royal Mail?

It is fully understandable that this question is asked. The 48 hours strikes were designed to create a backlog. It is only over the next couple of days that we will see the true picture nationwide. Already planes are bulking out, mailsort is holed up in RDCs and Mail Centres are stacked to the walls. Against this backdrop Royal Mail now face further rolling action.

Now is the time when supporting your union matters more than ever. We have a backlog, we have a tactical advantage and we cannot afford to let it slip at any cost. The CWU negotiators now have a strong base from which to hold talks.

I would never mislead any member into thinking the dispute will end today, tomorrow or next week but what I do know is that the more people who support strike action the quicker the dispute will come to an end.

We need to weigh up what we could lose. At the moment we have lost a few hundred pounds. This is no small sum but place that against the value of your pension scheme! Place it against the value of total flexibility – which would see many of you having to leave the business.

I am confident that come 6pm on Monday the Mail Centre will once again be out in force! I am also proud that our part-time late staff are the first out this time. Before the dispute many labelled this group of workers as a weak link but we have proven that they are as rock solid as everyone else!

As always many things come into consideration for individuals when weighing up whether or not to take strike action. I ask you to weigh up the most important thing of all – TRUST.

You can trust managers who
• Perform your work whilst we are on strike
• Tell us they support us then sign overtime dockets while we are losing money
• Do not have any confidence in the leadership of Royal Mail
• Cannot answer even the most simplistic question about this dispute
• Claim before every strike date that ‘lots of people have approached them about coming to work’ – only to be exposed each time!

Or you can trust your REPS who
• Spend countless hours of their own time working on your behalf
• Spend ridiculous hours on the picket line including camping overnight
• Have led from the front throughout this dispute
• Who have communicated to you right from Day 1
• Who are out there with you, alongside you fighting for your futures

We all hope that before next Monday/Tuesday a resolution can be found. If however we need to apply further pressure to Royal Mail then in am confident that ************ Mail Centre will once again stand rock solid against the pressure and attacks on our terms and conditions. I have always been proud to be your Area Representative but the last few weeks have been exceptional. We’ve come so far – it’s now squeaky bum time – Lets make sure they squeak first.

Top draw almost brings a bloody tear to my eye.
When this dispute is over there are many people who will be able to stand tall and be able to hold their heads up high.
One of them is our local rep Mick Matthews and i make no apologies for naming him.
He has been like a rock from the start of this dispute stood shoulder to shoulder with anyone who had a problem and been the first and last on every picket line with his trusty white van loaded with coffee and biscuits.
It also comes at a financial loss to him on top of the strike money as he has put his gardening job on the back burner which will no doubt cost him a few hundred pounds a week to concentrate on organising the troops.
If every office had a Mick Matthews we would never have a problem.

We walked today in Liverpool, b/c we had lost 4 days pay and then we came to work and were old we were starting at 6.00, isn't that one of the reasons we first went on strike for? so i feel justified in our actions today.
