(Reuters) - The deadline for an agreement between Britain's newly privatised Royal Mail (RMG.L) postal service and union members on pay and working conditions has been extended to December 3.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents most Royal Mail staff, said on Tuesday there had been "significant progress" in reaching an agreement over an improved pay offer, better working conditions and a separate pension agreement.

"We are confident that negotiations will conclude during this extended period," said CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward.

Last month Royal Mail staff called off a planned strike after both parties committed to reaching an agreement.

On Tuesday the CWU said the legal validity of the current industrial action ballot had now been extended to December 3, the last date that notice of strike action can be served.

The union, which in July rejected an 8.6 percent pay increase over three years and a lump sum payment of 300 pounds, said it was considering an improved pay offer from Royal Mail.

The CWU added that progress had been made on issues including pensions and legal protections but that it still had areas to resolve around delivery workloads.

CWU postal executives are due to meet again on December 2 to consider its position.

And what do you know of the talks? I'm sick of the barrack room lawyers on this forum. We didn't vote to on go on strike,we voted yes to get an agreement with the threat of industrial action and Royal Mail have moved, lets wait and see.

Our union leaders are now taking the piss. These continuing extenstions are playing right into royal mails hand. Here's a scenario. There will be no more extensions. We present 3 weeks of rolling strike action. We continue to negotiate but if no deal is forthcoming then each action that was presented comes into play. Isn't that called negotiating from a postition of strength? I keep hearing from people on this forum to have faith in our union leaders. Isn't it about time they have faith in us?

Look it seems like an agreement has been made pending addressing delivery issues. It is getting the lawyers to agree that it is legally binding. Do you want our union to rush this part and find out later that your five year deal is not water tight? Better safe then sorry.

Did anyone say at the start that every word was going to be tweeted to the members? Or was it clear there would be no briefing from either side while the talks were ongoing?
Was it clear from the outset that it was a closed pay offer, not to be shared?

While everyone would like to know more, that isn't how it works.

Plus just remember each week you strike from now on, will cost you between £25 and maybe £50 of your Christmas bonus. Depending on whether the new £100 Christmas money is included in the Industrial action claw back clause. times four weeks and you won't have a Christmas bonus.

It's the 22nd of August so to wait until 2nd September isn't an unconscionable time particularly as I think that could well be time spent galvanising a yes vote and a very large proportion of returned ballots. One of the things that is worrying is the thought of many members not returning the ballot paper, either way, YES or NO.
Personally I'll be voting YES and will stand on the picket line as I have always done.

As you can see I posted this on August 22nd, the ballot was September 2nd discussions have been ongoing throughout this period - have we truly been well served to be still negotiating without using the ballot - the threat of IA is a totally empty gesture.
