Office Vacancies and Vacancies of hours.

I ve been working for Royal Mail since Feb 2013.

I started out on a six month temp contract as reserve collections (22 hours a week) to Cover maternity.

Two duties on deliveries came up in June. I put in for both, was the only person to put in for one of them, but was told I was not eligible to apply as both duties were 30 hours, and my contract was 22 hours collections and it was a vacancy of office not hours (? don't know what that means)

I ve now been re contracted until Feb 2014, same deal 22 hours collections.

In that time I must have done an average of 20 hours + on deliveries as overtime along with my collections.

The Woman I was covering on Maternity has decided not to return to work , So the reserve collection duty went up as a pick and someone with more seniority than me got it (Fair enough)

The DOM says I am now substantive 22 hours, I don't have the Reserve duty, but I have those hours on the template.

The guy who took the reserve collection duty, Duty has gone on the board 15.50 hrs, for which I can apply and may or may not get again on seniority.

There have also put 2 delivery duties on the board again (30 Hours), one of which is the duty I was the only one to apply for last time,

The DOM has once again said I am not eligible to apply for either of these duties.

His explanation is that this is a different VO (don't really understand) and the funding comes from a different pot.

In my short time at the office I am aware of 7 vacancies on Deliveries, 4 people have resigned, 1 has been dismissed and 2 have transferred to collections.

Can any one explain to me why I cant apply for Vacancies on Deliveries and what the hell a VO is compared to a Vacancy.

Our CWU rep has tried but it still doesn't make sense to me.

I work more OT on deliveries than my contracted collections but they say I cant apply for vacancies on deliveries.

Other members of the collection team are applying for the deliveries vacancies. And deliveries team regularly transfer to Collections using their seniority to get the duties on collections I could go for.

I may be wrong but if you are part of a collection hub at a delivery office you should be able to apply for a vacancy in that office, if you are a collection driver as part of a mail centre collection team then I am not sure. The contract issue shouldn't apply otherwise how would anyone get a job with more hours. I think the DOM is probably wrong for whatever reason ,pursue through area rep if you get no joy from local rep.

You have to apply to transfer to deliveries from collections, sounds a farce which to any normal person it is but unfortunately that's how this company seems to work.

Your manager should know that but obviously he'll be too lazy to be bothered.

Have you got a seperate manager in your unit who's in charge of deliveries ? If so then it's best to have a word with him.

I m part of Collections team at a Delivery office.

i.e collect from Boxes and Businesses and Post Offices.

We have several managers on Deliveries, but you don't see any of them after 2 pm when the whole show is run by a collections supervisor based in the Cage.

I m going to have another go at the CWU Rep and ask him why all vacancies aren't open to all staff.

I m fast becoming postman without portfolio as Delivery staff with more seniority than me keep taking collection duties and " I cant apply for deliveries vacancies"

What really gets me is the DOM is quite happy for me to come in and work more hours OT on deliveries than my Collections contract, yet there's no Vacancies on deliveries

I can apply for? If I could afford to I d drop the OT on deliveries but someone else would just fill the void and it wouldn't create a duty.
