Light Weight Trolleys Are Mandatory

Since the national agreement on working outdoors using methods states that the use of LWT's is mandatory, then why are the management getting away with not enforcing the usage of them?

Not only does it undermine the national agreement, it also puts our members at risk of injury by being allowed to cut corners, which in turn also gives the false perception that the outdoor delivery workload is manageable. Not to mention if a member has an accident they will be to blame and not Royal Mail.

Twice now I have also been told by a manager in my office that Royal Mail do not want us to use the equipment.... if this is the case why is the CWU not tackling this issue head on?

line managers encourage use of bags over shoulders on nearly every duty to SAVE time before H&S issues

Weighing pouches, I dont think I've seen any scales over the past year. We used to have some to weigh the yorks when they came from thee mail centre, so we could use that, but nothing.
As for the safety reps turning a blind eye, well I used to be a safety rep until a popularity contest took place (ballot) and on my watch I would have never let this slip down the legside.

There are so many health and safety rules being broken by not enforcing it I'm suprised nothing has been done.

It is a failing in the union at national level that it has not forced senior management to address the behavior of its junior managers with regards to the mandatory use of delivery equipment.
Dave Joyce can write as many 10,000 word LTBs as he likes about spikeys and dog pegs but this is a national issue that has more or less been ignored at national level.

Having said that members who do not use the correct delivery methods have to take responsibility for their own stupidity.
The union is failing those who do use the correct methods because those members are being bullied by unfair comparison to those that don't.

Fishtank you've hit the nail on the head. I have used the justsayit email to Moya and always get replies. The Dom usually gives a brief telling everyone to use the equipment. However this is just lipservice, they are supposed to go out and check/challenge/coach those that fail to use the equipment. One excuse used for failing to use is health and safety, which in most cases is a cop out. I used to be a safety rep and half the stuff I get told is an H&S issue is usually bollox because they just don't want to use any of it.

Its high time the CWU leadership started to enforce the agreements it has help design in negotiations, or are they too paying lipservice (this is what we have agreed but we don't give a s**t really)!

DOM's will always take the easy option if they are allowed too. It doesn't help when unit and area reps turn a blind eye. As a unit safety rep on deliveries, I have no problem with reporting any H&S violations up the chain of command on both sides of the fence. At some point you will reach someone who is accountable and will have to question blatant disregard for health and safety law, because that is what we are talking about. Managers and workers have a responisiblity towards health and safety and they have to held to account for their actions.

I have noticed this in our office too. Managers have realised that it takes longer with a trolley and are now actively backtracking telling people that its okay to use trollies if it makes the job quicker.

Which leaves me I use my lwt and do the job that way royal mail want me to do it. The result of this is I am bullied every day by my manager and told I go to slow as he compares me with them. These same people tell my manager they don't want to work with me as I'm to slow as they want to run around with a bag. Rep was of no help what so ever! Which now leaves me under pressure to not use my lwt and use a bag so I can finish on time and putting my h&s at risk.

I know exactly how you feel mate im not bullied everyday but i use the lightweight trolley take breaks don't start early etc ,but you always feel the odd one out

I suppose I could ask why are OPG's not abiding by the rules?

If OPG's can't be bothered to do the job properly (and am fed up with the f***ing excuse 'that it takes me longer'); then what is the hope for us. If we continue to shaft ourselves then we will reap what we sow.

Have just photographed a postie with his mountain bike, grey tray tied to it. Tried to tell them about no insurance etc. Have contacted RM, doubt anything will get done. Problem is day off cover is being harassed for not being able to clear the duty.

Got an idea, why don't we all email moya on justsayit@royalmail.com. Complain about this issue and raise its profile. I've sent my emails before and got replies and the dom has to act. So the more that complain the better.
Those of you that are safety reps get in touch with your local HSE and get them to do something.

speaking of which,,, the union has dropped it. BUT, rm seem to be ignoring this fact. its in the propaganda rag EVERY month, and they are advertising for world class mail managers vacancies on their website and rm t.v. is it just to stir us up or has the unoin took it up again?
