Flexing on a Saturday.

Our office has turned to poo the last few months due to under staffing, 6 people have left in an office of around 50 and have not been replaced, now whole walks are not going out or they deliver a very small road and then say the walk was only a 'part failure'

Anyway to the point, today our line manager was told by a director to ask us to flex up and that he was to make a list of those that refused and why, now it's my understanding that if you flex the time has to be given back in the same week making flexing on a Saturday impossible, our line manager produced a piece of paperwork headed 'Flexing the facts' which stated you can flex on a Saturday as it then becomes a rolling week and they can give you the 30 mins back on the Tuesday on the following week, this is rubbish right?

don't particularly believe it. also I was told they have to give you 24 hours notice to be flexible.

It's very short on facts.

• Variation of hours – Where necessary, for example when traffic
volumes are unexpectedly high or resourcing issues arise, individuals
may be asked and may themselves request to vary their duty times by
up to 30 minutes on a swings and roundabouts basis. Again, individual
circumstances will be taken into account and total weekly contractual
hours would not change.

If you don't get it back until the following week your total weekly contractual
hours would change.

'May be asked' As this is a request and not an order, the receiver of the request must have the option to accept or decline.

'Individual circumstances will be taken into account' As this is the case, any personal reason for not flexing must be taken into account. An employer cannot make you work beyond your conditioned hours, so therefore they have to accept your reasons for not wanting to work beyond your time.

Flexing is suppoeed to be a give and take thing, I wonder how many people have asked to knock off early and been granted permission? My guess is none.

I'm sure I read flexing is because of mail volumes not staff issues. If your office has staff issues the finger should be pointed at your dom. Ask him how much savings he's making.
