An appeal to all trade unionists.

Dear Brothers and sisters

The postal workersâ€™ strike is a dispute between those who believe in public service and those who believe in the rule of the market and profit.

It is the same central issue which lies at the heart of the disputes in the civil service.

We believe that this is a crucial moment for all workers, but particularly for those in the CWU and PCS unions.

We can either bow down to an agenda of cuts, privatisation and pay reductions, or successfully fight back and open up new possibilities of resistance by many other workers.

The government has sided with management in the postal dispute.

Gordon Brown and other ministers have refused to put pressure on Royal Mail to back off from the devastation of the postal service, major pay cuts, harsh new conditions, 40,000 job losses, over 2,000 Post Office closures and a savage assault on pensions.

That must mean they are backing these attacks 100 percent.

They have lined up behind Royal Mail bosses such as Allan Leighton, a man who works one day a week for the Post Office yet tells postal workers they are 25 percent overpaid and 40 percent underworked.

And in the civil service Gordon Brown is directly responsible for policies that will shatter the service to the public and cause over 104,000 job losses (including compulsory redundancies), pay cuts for already poorly paid workers, and yet more privatisation.

We face common challenges, and need a common response. We believe our two unions should be uniting their battles, and should set a date for coordinated strike action in the near future.

This could become a day of action and solidarity for the entire labour movement.

No one group of workers should be left isolated when the governmentâ€™s attacks will impact on millions of public sector workers and will set an example for firms that employ millions more in the private sector.

Civil service workers have repeatedly signalled their desire to keep up their campaign to defend public services and decently paid jobs.

The postal workers will be escalating their strikes, escalating the political campaign and escalating the appeal to the wider public to back the union.

But a crucial decision now is to strengthen the bonds of fighting unity between our two unions.

We call on all trades unionists and working people to:

Deliver maximum solidarity to the postal workers
Organise delegations to picket lines in future strikes
Invite CWU and PCS members to union meetings
Support the CWUâ€™s fighting fund
Join any CWU marches and rallies
Sign the CWUâ€™s petition in defence of postal services
We urge all trade unionists, particularly those in the CWU and PCS to add their names to this statement.

it's time the union reconcidered it's political leavy to the labour party... maybe if we hit those 'fat cats' in THEIR pocket they might do something about it.

I hope they tell labour to get to fuk, they would be better giving the money to those that have supported them in this strike action and are suffering severe financial diffulcties due to it.

That's a very good idea.

Perhaps all unions should pool (all?) their monies together in times like this so that we won't be disappointed when we get stabbed in the back by our political allies.

Go to the local branch and get the political levy forms. I've started handing them out in my office. All unions should squeeze the life out of new labour.

Day of action great idea. Shame MAY 1ST is so far away as that would be the date of choice of most i would guess. The formation of a new political force born out of the TRADE UNION movement is long over due and should have taken place the moment it became clear the anti union laws that Thatcher passed wernt being repealed. All T.U.C. affiliated unions should withdraw funding and support for the Labour Party and start to field their own candidates in all safe Labour seats and marginals. For councils, parliaments and european parliament.
The labour party needs a big kick up the backside. It is prepared for this backlash from its grassroots as for many years it has sought the support of the city millionares. So what are we waiting for. General secretarys get together and prepare to support motions from the grass roots at next years conferances to rid our selves of Labour. They have milked us for too long now. But we have to have a united front and a figure head to lead us. Mr CROWE step forward please your countys working peoples need you NOW!

All you need to do is send a letter to union HQ stating that you don't want to pay the political levy anymore. That's what I did and they stopped it straight away. When our union stops funding right wing organisations such as the Labour/Conservative/Liberal grouping which is currently running our country and actively working against postal workers and the working class in general, I might reinstate my 10p.
Perhaps they should think about funding organisations which support us such as the Socialist Party.

The vast majority of TUC unions do not affilate to Labour, the number of unions affilating to Labour is a mere 16 some of whom are small unions.

Id much prefer the Green party. They pick up a lot of dissafected socalists and are a very strong pro trade union party.

Well To get our house in order we should bin the PEC members and vote in people who will stand for Rights that BRANCH members want and now the HQ has given US the reigns to do this... Take em...
