anyway long and short .

manager came out to my rural round today , he said looking for an address i had filled in a hazzard card for , and i had the wife in the van keeping me company .

she works in a post office as a assistant manager but that held no sway . he ordered me to get her out of the van immediatly . she can get a taxi .and we will have a meeting about it on monday .

now i have never ever been told that nobody is allowed in the van , i have also seen past managers wives in vans doing people cut offs.
he claims it invalidates the insurance but how can it be ok to have "post buses " in scotland ,postvans, picking people up and taking them to the shops etc . Yet we are supposed to guess its not allowed and not insured ...one policy surely covers one fleet .

Unauthorised passengers

No unauthorised person is permitted to travel in a Royal Mail vehicle. The Royal Mail Group insurance covers ‘Authorised use only’, therefore if you carry an unauthorised passenger the insurance cover may be affected. This means you may be driving while uninsured. Current maximum penalties are a £5,000 fine, possible disqualification and up to three points on your licence.

Royal Mail and the Post Office are 2 separate companies now - so not even the same fleet.

They have PSV licenses though (the drivers of the few Post Buses left) and they will have specific insurance for them.

Its diffult to say what is likely to happen in the current climate, but I'd get the ADR involved straight away and would also try to get witness willing to say in a meeting that they, like you have seen managers wives in the Vans as well.

Wouldn't worry mate av had my son in mine ok sum people call me silly but it was a last minute thing child care issues and I did phone my dim and told him . Just sat in the front playin Nintendo

As you can imagine if you had an accident while carrying an unauthorised passenger it would probably be your last move as a Royal Mail employee,if something went missing while carrying an unauthorised passenger etc,etc.

Only problem I foresee with lack of training/knowledge/guidelines route is that it does say in drivers manual about unauthorised passengers, and in my unit at least, we are required to sign up to say we have read and understood its contents. (Usually every year).

I have in the past refused to give a manager a lift when asked (often to where their car is parked - lazy twats) on the grounds it is unauthorised, even to the point telling them they can't authorise it, it must be my direct lino or DOM.

Even dropping an elastic band on delivery can be a sackable offence these days if they wanted to get rid of someone,it depends how well regarded you are by your dom.
Bloke who worked on the delivery next to me recently asked the dom if he could take his mrs to the doctors in the van,the dom said yes no prob,as long as you dont book any extra extended for it!!
