Postal workers' union supports delivery boycott

A BRISTOL postal workers' union official has warned of industrial action over the privatisation of Royal Mail.

David Wilshire, from the Communication Workers Union, called for "serious national negotiations" to avoid "prolonged industrial conflict".

The CWU recently announced the results of a national consultative ballot of 112,000 postal workers in which 96 per cent opposed privatisation.

Mr Wilshire said: "The workforce does not support the Government or Royal Mail on selling the company.

"The company is flourishing in public ownership, as the recent doubling of profit proves.

"Postal workers are not going to sacrifice their souls for a so-called 10 per cent stake when they know their jobs, pensions and conditions are once again under threat.

"It is time for serious national negotiations to find a solution that can really align the interests of all parties. If this cannot be found then prolonged industrial conflict looks inevitable."

Royal Mail workers also voted in favour of a boycott of delivering competitors' mail.

But the company warned employees that a boycott could result in a significant loss of business.

Business Minister Michael Fallon has promised workers 10 per cent of the shares in a privatisation deal.
