give the UNION credit!!!

Post by osgoody1970 »

the union have come in for a lot of stick over the last few years, but with this consultative ballot, they have been spot on, royal mail are now putting statements out, saying, we take on board the feelings of their staff, they cannot do anything else, now is the time to get behind your union and back them to the hilt!!! the fight is only just starting!!!!

I agree, so far the Union seems to playing this better than Royal Mail and I am, and will be, 100% in support of the Union when they ask for action. However, I also believe that the union becomes stronger when it takes on the concerns of members from previous actions. In fact that's one reason why at the moment I think they are on the front foot, they listened and then acted on the concerns of the membership, lets hope they keep doing so far into the future.

One of the reasons the CWU are playing better than RM stems from the fact that we made a large profit.
If our last set of financial results had been disastrous there would have been no real argument against privatisation and no-one willing to join the coalition of forces against it. We would have been seen as a basket case with dinosaur unions in need of modernisation.
Unpalatable as it is for some, the BT2010 Agreement and the subsequent joint statements etc were and remain part and parcel of the strategy to fight and win the case for resisting privatisation.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

The threat of the removal of check off gets trotted out every time we have a fight with them.
Which side it comes from is debatable but I'll believe it when I see it.

If it does come from RM and they are going to threaten us every time they don't like what we have to say then maybe we should look long term at removing that hold over us they have.

You could argue that both ways, that a profitable RM is far more enticing to potential buyers than a loss making basket case with dinosaur unions in need of modernisation.

I'm not convinced that either scenario would be one I would be willing to risk disengaging the membership over and I'm certainly not buying that BT2010 was part of any long term strategy to defeat privatisation.
I would also question whether much if any of the profits are driven by the modernisation programme rather than price increases ,regulatory changes and the removal of the pension liability.

What BT2010 was,was an attempt to deal with the changing face of the postal market but it didn't fail because of any of the basic principles within it.
It failed because it was too vague and complex where it needed to be simple and too simple where it needed to address complex issues.
It failed because those tasked with implementing it couldn't understand it so made up their own interpretations, savings were always the driving force and those tasked with overseeing it...didn't.
It also failed because the basic communication was piss poor even though the amount of complicated communication was never ending.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

BT2010 Agreement was part of a strategy to combat privatisation? :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle am I in a farmyard? BT2010 was and continues to be a disaster, more than 3 years down the line and it's still being tweaked.................still after that length of time it's the first time I've heard that nugget, maybe it will become part of union folklore :cuppa

Pretty good considering, trying to lose a day but the unit rep is not too keen so it looks like I'm going to have to keep to 5 days, because I would not go against his wishes. It'll probably mean I'll retire this year but I've had a good run :angel There'll be quite a few glad to see the back of me I dare say :chuckle . I would like to see the union get back on an even keel before I do go and I know there are good officers out there and that they will eventually pull things round. Hope you and yours keep well.

I think it's a once in a lifetime chance for the CWU at this juncture. We can argue forever about Way Forward, Pay and Mod or BT2010 but the reality is this debate now is about the very future of everything we hold dear - Job Security, Pay, Pensions, trade union rights and much more.

If the CWU can defeat privatisation (and I believe it can) then it will be the biggest victory in our history. There are going to be some squeaky bum moments in the next few months.

I wish I had your faith in the battle against privatisation lovejoy, it's a slippery slope and no good would come of it so I do hope that this Government sees sense and doesn't try to raise a fast buck to offset any deficit. I'm surprised the public haven't been more vocal after the experiences of the previous sell offs of energy and seen the huge price rises and poor customer support. They do say a good soldier never looks behind and that's true in the coming struggle, what's gone is gone and what is to come is the important debate.
