We’re making money on Access mail. It’s important that we deliver all mail well, including Access mail

At this week’s CWU policy forum members voted in favour of the threat of a mail boycott ‘if Ofcom fails to protect the UK's mail service’.

But, while Access mail was once significantly loss making, it’s profitable today. In the last financial year – 2011/12 – we made £80 million on Access mail (after modernisation before other exceptional costs).

The new regulatory framework we got also allows us to price on a more commercial basis.

We are saying the following to the media and other stakeholders:

Royal Mail is fully committed to the delivery of the mail entrusted with us under downstream Access contracts.
One in two of all the letters we handle is Access mail.
All of our customers’ mail is important to us and needs to be delivered.

We have made it clear to the union and our employees that it is vital for Royal Mail and for the sustainability of the Universal Service that we continue to provide the high quality delivery service that our customers have grown to expect.

Sounds suspicious to me. Also looks like it has at least in part become profitable due to our own cost cutting, and possibly because some 'exceptional costs' haven't been taken into account.

We would make more money if we took out the middle man, TNT, UKmail etc and got this work direct. Let them deliver it themselves or loose the contracts for failing to do so.

TNT wont deliver to a farm lane a quarter mile long and back with one letter!!
I expect most of the top boys and girl have got 'interest's in these companies like TNT etc, it's all corrupt.
This boycott threat is the right thing to do RM's reply to this is weak.

I did hear rumours, and they may have been somewhere on this site, that TNT were considering withdrawing from the UK market as they were failing badly. They're not making money here. Even though they took some big contracts from RM and left us to do the work for them. At a loss to us no less.
