Unauthorised absence....
Has anyone had any experiences of how managers deal with or more importantly, how managers should deal with 'unauthorised absence'. There have been 2 incidents in my office where workers have failed to ring in sick and are then contacted by managers by phone (several attempts) after 3 or 4 hours threatening to stop pay, take down the conduct code etc. Is there a cut off time when posties don't contact their office before a manager attempts to contact them, is there a policy on that? Also, on one of the occasions, a manager rang a home number to someone who had not contacted the office when not attending,he had gone home sick the previous day after 3 hours work, he hadn't phoned up to say he wasn't coming in, so when the manager phoned his home at 10am, the wife answered and stated to the manager 'what you're doing is harassment, my husbands in bed ill.' The manager is now considering taking the sick postie down the conduct code for the way his wife spoke to him on the phone.

Re: Unauthorised absence....
What happens if the employee does not make contact and is absent?
Where an employee is absent and has not made contact with the manager, the manager should attempt to contact the employee. This should include several attempts before recording the absence as unauthorised. If contact is still not made then the manager should record the employee’s absence as unauthorised via Managing My Team on PSP (Enter/update absence). The manager will then be prompted to produce Day One Letter No Contact, which should be sent to the employee by Special Delivery and by First Class post. The manager should then follow the process contained within the Unauthorised Absence Guide.

That should be an interesting case..........makingsounds wrote: The manager is now considering taking the sick postie down the conduct code for the way his wife spoke to him on the phone.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I've often wondered if "by proxy" would stand up in a conduct case.clashcityrocker wrote:That should be an interesting case..........makingsounds wrote: The manager is now considering taking the sick postie down the conduct code for the way his wife spoke to him on the phone.
I know someone whose husband turned up at work and threatened to beat the crap out of a line manager.
No charges were brought.
Just putting it out there.

That all makes sense to me but as per usual we cannot access the 'Unauthorised Absence Guide' to see if the manager is or has acted appropriately or can we

Re: Unauthorised absence....
In the good old days of 5.00am starts it was quite normal for a driver to be sent out to knock on the doors of oversleepers. They didnt have to wake me up though- my Mum always did that with a cup of tea at 4.15am. And if I had a hangover she would ring in sick for me :. That was 30years ago - I`m a big boy now , but thanks Mum for helping me keep my job while I was a young waster

"he had gone home sick the previous day after 3 hours work"
you say he had gone home sick ?
presumably, he informed someone of authority that he was going home "sick".
that means the absence should be classed as sick leave.
[ok, you are supposed to keep them informed, but if you are sick, then that is an issue for a later date, but assuming the management knew he went home sick, then that absence is a continuation]
