Royal Mail strike threat 'suicidal'

The postal workers’ threat to block ‘final mile’ deliveries from the likes of TNT Post and UK Mail has been branded suicidal by industry experts, who claim it will spark legal action and even derail privatisation.

Final mile deliveries now account for more half of all Royal Mail’s postal business, but the Communication Workers’ Union is to ballot its 120,000 Royal Mail members in the New Year over whether they should stop handling all private mail.

The move has been sparked by TNT’s plans to expand its own mail delivery scheme, which started in April in the London postcodes of W1-16 and SW1.
The Dutch-owned company has since been granted permission for trial deliveries to EC and WC addresses in the City of London.

The CWU has called for regulator Ofcom to halt the experiment, saying that the expansion of the private sector would lead to a further decline in the Royal Mail’s finances.

The union maintains that TNT “does not have to meet any quality standards while paying people little more than minimum wage. That will lead to a race to the bottom on pay which will be bad news for the economy in general and postal workers in particular”.

A TNT spokesman said: “We disagree with the points the CWU has made. We plan to create 20,000 jobs over the next five years in the postal sector, which is good news for the British economy and good news for the UK postal sector.”

And one industry source told DecisionMarketing: “This is suicidal. Private operators bring in £1.4bn worth of mail through Royal Mail – 44% of all letters in the UK postal system, and three-quarters of all bulk mail – which they are contracted to deliver.

“Any move to boycott this will get the lawyers twitching. More worryingly for the Government, who is going to want to invest in a business with such a highly volatile workforce? Agree with the sentiment or not, private investors will not welcome this threat.”

Obviously the 'industry source' is not the brightest spark in the box with that quote :chuckle

Seems like the big rip off has been exposed. Some of those MPs who have their greedy fingers in the DSA cake want to have and eat it. Can't do both but no matter how bright its packaging, pay the baker crap money, you get what you pay for, crap products.
DSA is bad for business alround and is killing the postal service by a thousand cuts.

what about the costs to RM of handling the return mail of DSA companies, should they not handle their own, eg send it back to them on their lorries after they have unloaded at MCs.

You are so right with that, I've often said it.
As a 'business' it doesn't make sound financial sense to do 'some one elses work' for nothing. Most of this DSA crap is using addresses obtained from mailing lists, some of which on my walk are still sending mail to people who DIED years ago. Much of the rest is either incorrectly addressed (No.13's where there aren't any) or is what we once knew as 'mailsort', proper to Royal Mail, to back fill the old 'second delivery' with 'Rebate' advertisng rubbish, that now goes straight into the recycling bins, (after the letter box).

If I ran Royal Mail, I would ask all PHG's to split the DSA 'Deads' from ours and instead of returning it to sender etc.,
'INVOICE THE DSA FIRM (TNT, UKMAIL, ONE POST, SECURED MAIL etc.) for the 'reposting' of their crap back through OUR SYSTEM!
DSA is a clear abuse of Royal Mail in every sense and although hard to prove, there is NOTHING TO STOP THESE FIRMS FROM INDUSTRIAL SABOTAGE, BY PUMPING OUR NETWORK WITH UNDELIVERABLE ITEMS BY THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, KNOWING THE FINANCIAL DAMAGE IT WILL DO TO ROYAL MAIL, THROUGH 'SECONDARY HANDLING'.

The other option is to sell it to POWERGEN for use in a new 'DSA & Door to Door Fueled power station, thus regaining the money lost by Royal Mail in having to handle this crap, but at least putting it to good use during these cold winter months.

Heres one for thought!

The CWU support the Labour Party, right?
The Labour Party, under the likes of Lord Mandleson have been complicit in the mess Royal Mail finds itself in.
Labour Councils around the country couldn't wait to 'dump' collections by Royal Mail and use an alternative DSA courier instead, not realising that Royal Mail will STILL HAVE TO DELIVER THE SAME COUNCIL TAX BILLS ETC.

As a result of lost revenue to Royal Mail through DSA hacking the proffits, post offices and major MAIL CENTERS in Labour controlled council areas had to close resulting in JOB LOSSES.
The now 'ex-Royal Mail employee's, now find themselves not only out of a job but also having to use COUNCIL SERVICES AND BENEFITS TO SUSTAIN THEM.

So what do we have?

A union that supports a party, which supports the demise of the employer, which leads the employer to 'DOWN SIZE' and make workers redundant, which then become a financial burden through no fault of their own, on the same Labour council which uses a PRIVATE COMPANY, which led to the closure of the Royal Mail local facility,
But "oh, hang on a minute", Royal Mail still have to deliver the same mail that they USED TO COLLECT AND SORT AND DISTRIBUTE, FROM THE LOCAL MAIL CENTER, WHICH EMPLOYED LOCAL PEOPLE, WHO WERE PAYING TAXES BACK INTO THE ECONOMY AND PAYING INTO THE LOCAL ECONOMY , every time they bought something because theyhad the wages to do that with.

In a nutsheel, the workers party, has ,

Supported Privatisation like the Tories,
Encouraged the demise of their own local economies by putting people out of work,
Accepted financial support from a union membership only to do the Tories biding and destroy a Great British institution, while at the same time, destroy workers rights, pay and conditions of service and overall, totally destroy and leave unrecognisable, the postal service which used to make a million pounds a day, with TWO Deliveries, Skynet, Railnet, TPO's etc, all gone to the dogs, in the name of,
'MODERNISATION'!
JUST WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE KIDDING.

THE CWU AND LABOUR HAVE ACTED LIKE TWO TURKEY'S FIGHTING OVER WHICH ONE GOES INTO THE OVEN FIRST FOR CHRISTMAS.

DO TURKEYS VOTE FOR CHRISTMAS????
WELL IF YOU VOTED 'YES' FOR THE BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION THEN 'YES'......
'YOU ARE A TURKEY'.
JUST LIKE THOSE TURKEYS OUTLINED ABOVE.

AT LEAST 'CHICKENS' IN NICK PARKS 'CHICKEN RUN' WERE ORGANISED AND ESCAPED.
THAT IS WHAT WE ALL NEED TO DO......
GET ORGANISED.....
STOP GOING ALONG WITH ANYTHING TO DO WITH PRIVATISATION, INCLUDING THE WORKERS PARTY, GOING AGAINST IT'S OWN FUNDING BACKERS, BY USING PRIVATE FIRMS TO UNDERCUT ROYAL MAIL, THEN ABUSE IT, THEN FINALLY LOSING IT, AND ASKING....
'WHAT WENT WRONG???'
NEVER MIND THE SPEIL ABOUT SAVING COUNCIL TAX PAYERS MONEY COZ IT'S CHEAPER.
IT'S NOT, IT COSTS COUNCILS, ROYAL MAIL AND LOCAL ECONOMIES MORE IN THE LONG RUN.

DSA IS A TOTAL FALSE ECONOMY......IT COST MORE THAN IT COULD EVER SAVE.

BAN IT, BIN IT, KILL IT!!

Whilst I agree with affiliation/political funding - I just don't agree with it ALL going to the Labour Party. I think it should be a reflection of the political views of members and every 5 years or so a vote should be taken and donation/affiliation fees should be divided as per the % of vote for each eligible party.

The biggest problem is not affiliation, but the fact that it all goes to the Labour party and you can only vote on disaffiliation if you pay into the Political fund, So if you don't support the Labour Party and don't want to donate to it you either have to leave the political fund and lose any influence on where the fund is used, or pay into a fund that goes to them and thereby in essence donating to a party that you believe doesn't support your politics. They have it nicely tied up.

Well said True Blue Terrier, I couldn't have put it better.
Now I know that some of you may find this a little odd, but given the 'common sense approach' as you have just described, I would like my political percentage to go to UKIP instead of Labour.

Why?

Labour
Conservative
Lib Dem All support Privatisation and the Lisbon Treaty which forced the 'Postal Services Act' through Parliament, although the instruction is contained within the EU Articles, it's the EU in Brussels and the EU loving main 3 parties who are complicit in our demise. THEY WILL NOT CHANGE COURSE ON THIS!

OR

UKIP,

WHO OPPOSE THE POSTAL SERVICES ACT, OPPOSE THE PRIVATISATION AND THE DISMANTLING OF OUR BRITISH HERITAGE AND WAY OF LIFE AND THE DESTRUCTION OF VITAL SERVICES TO COMMUNITIES AND, THEY OPPOSE THE 'GET RICH QUICK' ATTITUDE OF THE EU TOWARDS FOREIGN BUSINESSES WHO ARE INTENT ON CREAMING OFF THE PROFITS THAT ROYAL MAIL MAKE AND WHO WANT TO FLOOD OUR COUNTRY WITH POORLY PAID WORKERS FROM THE POORER PARTS OF THE EU BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT OUR JOBS ARE THE SORT OF WORK THAT ANY ONE WHO CAN'T SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH CAN DO.

COME 2014, YOU SEE IF I'M NOT RIGHT.
YOU'LL BE OUT TILL 'TICK TOCK' DELIVERING THE EQUIVALENT OF 3 OR 4 WALKS FOR A POXY MINIMUM WAGE, COZ IF YOU DON'T........THERE'LL BE PLENTY FROM OTHER EU STATES WHO WILL.

QUALITY OF SERVICE NEED NOT APPLY.

I fully agree with all off above. How many unofficial redirections ofwhich are DSA letters do RM redirect for nothing? That must cost millions for RM, but heho RM made a profit!
