Reps need to be able to understand what is written down. The Union should be serious about developing comprehension skills. Every rep should have their comprehension skills measured and be given training to improve their skills. Verbal’ reasoning tests assess understanding and comprehension skills and the CWU should use these tests to find out where each rep is relative to the level of comprehension needed to understand relevant written material.

We put too much value on time served and the belief that development will happen naturally. Mistakes get repeated and become habits. It doesn't follow that because someone has been doing something for a long time, they must be good at it. We are a democratic organisation and if the voters find out that a senior rep can't understand something that is written down, they will not vote for that candidate.

Reps should have to meet standards before they are allowed to hold responsibility for areas and larger geographical locations. It's hard to argue that objective selection procedures should be used to determine who gets promotion in the workplace when we don't even measure the capabilities of our own reps.

Why just unit reps - I believe with the 2010 fiasco we should be looking much higher up the ladder..........however you probably have a point in that many are voted in on personality rather than ability............take politicians for example.
