Part-time annual leave, adjusted for Bank Holidays

Post by gregfrain »

I am a postman working at Congleton DO. My contract is for Saturdays, 7 hours a week, and states that:

“If you are employed on a part time basis you will have your bank holiday entitlement adjusted in accordance with the Harmonisation of Part Time Conditions of Service Agreement and/or the branch Office Staff Agreement, details of which can be found on HR Help.”

My understanding is that this is to prevent situations where people working part-time on (for example) Mondays and Fridays only would get the majority of Bank Holidays, and those working the same number of days, but Tuesday and Wednesday for example, get almost none (depending which weekdays Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day fall on).

Therefore, the usual formula is basically to pro-rata bank holiday entitlement and add it to annual leave. This is how it used to work in the NHS, but I have been unable to find the above documents on line, so it's possible Royal Mail do things slightly differently. I imagine the principle is the same however, but my Line Managers seem unconvinced. My calculation regarding the days I owe is as follows:

The standard entitlement is 22.5 days, and there are 9 bank holidays (nb Queen's Jubilee) during the 12 months of my contract, none of which fall on a Saturday - therefore, consider 31.5 days as the total paid number of days off for full time staff with my duration of service. Since I only work one day instead of five, pro rata this to give: 31.5 / 5 = 6.3 days.

I was wondering whether anyone on here can confirm if my logic is correct?
Thanks
Greg

This works as a general rule of thumb:
Whatever your line manager says is wrong.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

So what am I entitled to then? I can claim a percentage of days back to have them off as leave?
Thanks again

Attached is a copy of what each employee is entitled to, all the nonsense about employees not entitled to a bank holiday because it falls on the day off etc is bo!!ox, the same with part timers who have roaming days (ie no set pattern) they are all entitled to a pro rata amount of days off which should be added to their leave list if they can not be given off as close to the bank holiday date.

Have fun with your managers.........

Wow, now in all of these years I was completely oblivious to that information, I'm certain that every employee in my DO is owed!
